The Alexander Theatre opening was a monumental event for the Glendale community. Built as a silent movie palace and vaudeville house, the Theatre’s future was bright.

Known to the community as “The Alex,” the Alexander Theatre became a sneak preview house from the 30’s to the 50’s where spotlights would tell the locals a show was about to go on. During WWII, the Theatre would play news clips before shows to help the community stay connected to their loved ones fighting across seas.

1940, the Alexander Theatre officially become the Alex with its newly built neon marquee, spire and starburst! “Alexander” was too long to put on the 3-D Marquee, architect S. Charles Lee shortened it the “ALEX.”

After decades of being a movie house, in the early 1990’s the Alex Theatre became a rental facility for all arts – visual and performing!

In 2013 the Alex got an expansion added on to the dressing rooms for performing groups of 100 + artists, our Theatre crew has storage and workshops for stage equipment and the staircase that was on the outside is now enclosed from the elements.

The Alex has been filled with the arts and culture for 94 years. We’re so excited to see what the next 94 years have in store!
