ECHOES OF SURVIVAL is an experimental documentary series about the ambiguity of what it means to be an Armenian living in America today. In April 2015, during the 100th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide, the author found himself drawn to the idea of how certain artists around the United States view themselves as Armenian, and how their identities shape their work. This project is an attempt to better understand who we are today, and how the culture has survived through these artists and their work.
AVO JOHN KAMBOURIAN was born and raised in Los Angeles. He picked up a camera at age 10 and cast his friends in comedic short films about Batman. Later he picked up editing while still in high school. In 2010, he traveled to Armenia, where he had an internship at Bars Media Studio, a documentary company. Upon returning to the US he earned his BA in Communication at UC San Diego. In subsequent years he returned to Armenia in between jobs as a PA, Assistant Editor, to work on his own documentaries about the region. Avo John works in post-production as an editor, having worked for companies such as Vice, Nat Geo, Hit RECord, and BMG Films.
Presented by the Armenian Film Society and Abril Bookstore.
