An Evening of Armenian Music of America Pressed on 78s

ARAKELIAN will present an evening of stories and songs taken from his collection of “78 records of Armenian music produced in America during the early 20th century on SATURDAY, JANUARY 27, 2018at 7:30pm at ABRIL BOOKSTORE – 415 E. This evening will focus on California. 1929 was the year of the first Armenian recording in Los Angeles. Find out what the “Lehmejuo Song” sounds like and who got kissed on the road to Fresno. H. Arakelian will present an evening of exploration of the early musical sounds and sights of Armenians in America. From coast to coast and cities and towns in between, the Armenians of the first half of the 20th century left behind a musical and artistic legacy for us to wander through. H. Arakelian has been collecting Armenian music pressed on ”78 rpm records, which are 10” records made between 1898 and the late 1950s. Venture with him on this journey of preserving cultural artifacts, as he exclusively plays selections of 78’s from his catalogue and shares stories. Rare songs and even some rare film clips will be screened. Be ready to tap your toes or even dance as you listen to selections of a unique variety; songs filled with humor, songs filled with longing.
Selections include samplings of the folk songs of the Kevorkians and Takakjians, the original lyrical compositions of Reuben and Vart Sarkisian, George Shah-Baronian’s unique Tar interpretations, the rare recordings of Yerchanig records, the cinematic work of Zaruhi and Setrag Vartian, and the hilarious and touching melodies of the Guy Chookoorian and family.
