Film Screening: “Watchers of the Sky”

December 10, 2017 @ 2:00 pm - 5:00 pm

The Sundance award winning WATCHERS OF THE SKY interweaves four stories of remarkable courage, compassion, and determination, while setting out to uncover the forgotten life of Raphael Lemkin – the man who created the word “genocide,” and believed the law could protect the world from mass atrocities. Inspired by Samantha Power’s Pulitzer Prize-winning book, A Problem From Hell, WATCHERS OF THE SKY takes you on a provocative journey from Nuremberg to The Hague, from Bosnia to Darfur, from criminality to justice, and from apathy to action. More info at www.watchersofthesky.com

After screening the film, we’ll be joined by Watchers Of The Sky’s producer Amelia Green-Dove who will share insight into the film’s mak…ing, its importance and participate in a Q&A.

Winner of Sundance Jury prize for Animation and the Sundance Award for Editing.

One Year: The Art of Politics in Los Angeles
Throughout history, artists have been activists – digging beneath the surface, posing the critical questions, challenging authority and calling the public to action. In today’s contentious climate, LA artists are responding with new urgency, seeking to tell their truth in an era when truth is becoming a precious commodity. Brand Library & Art Center is pleased to present ONE YEAR: The Art of Politics in Los Angeles, a group exhibition of over 20 Los Angeles-based artists who have been addressing issues like immigration, race, gender and environment as an integral part of their practice. Conceived and organized by Joey Forsyte, Lawrence Gipe and Alex Kritselis, the selected artists are diverse in culture, identity and age. They present a multiplicity of voices who construct a narrative from a wide range of disciplines including video, painting, drawing, fiber arts, ceramics, mixed media and photography.

The artists of ONE YEAR: The Art of Politics in Los Angeles are united in their desire to inspire awareness, as well as manifest their deep political convictions through their art.

ARTISTS: Kim Abeles, Guillermo Bert, Eileen Cowin, Kohshin Finley, Joey Forsyte, Keiko Fukazawa, Lawrence Gipe, Mark Steven Greenfield, Scott Grieger, Emily Halpern, Nery Gabriel Lemus, Alex Kritselis, Constance Mallinson, Star Montana, Amitis Motevalli, Thinh Nguyen, Umar Rashid (Frohawk Two Feathers), Ben Sakoguchi, Alexis Smith, Linda Vallejo, and HK Zamani.
