SUMMARY:Marco Millions
DESCRIPTION:The story of Marco Polo\, dynamic young explorer of the Far East\, as told by one of America’s leading playwrights\, Eugene O’Neill. Once described in a 1928 review “…a coruscating satire\, biting in its irony\, suffused with poetry\, rich and dramatic in its simple story\, and resplendently colorful in its background\, atmosphere and imagery…” O’Neill clearly takes aim at the politics of his time\, and ends up with a beautiful and poignant allegory for ALL time. Young Marco is a man eager for success – some might even say “destined” for it. But how that success is achieved\, and what it might ultimately cost\, becomes the focus of this rarely performed masterpiece.

SUMMARY:La Diosa Presents EVA AYLLÓN EN CONCIERTO
DESCRIPTION:La Diosa presents EVA AYLLÓN live in concert. With a legendary voice that embodies the spirit of a nation\, Eva Ayllón is one of Peru’s most enduring stars. She’s been called the ‘Tina Turner from Peru’ and the ‘Queen of landó’ (a traditional Afro-Peruvian musical form) for her larger-than-life stage personality and fearsome dance chops. Infused with colorful sounds and flavors from the coastal plains of Lima\, Ayllón’s music overflows with her country’s indigenous\, African\, and Spanish musical heritage in a style called música criolla\, in which call-and-response\, complex syncopation\, and polyrhythms combine with sweet\, melancholic melodies to create a unique and powerful sound. \nPERFORMANCE ADVISORY\nPerformance Language: Spanish

SUMMARY:Los Angeles Ballet Academy Presents A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM
DESCRIPTION:Kick off your summer entertainment with a magical ballet based on Shakespeare’s popular comedy A Midsummer Night’s Dream. \nYou can enjoy romance in all its guises to the evocative music of Mendelssohn with the talented dancers of Los Angeles Ballet Academy. The mischievous fairy Puck plays a pivotal role in the comic adventures and misadventures\, quarrels and re-unitings of two pairs of mortal lovers\, and the king and queen of the fairies\, Oberon and Titania. And don’t miss the hilarious scene when rustic Bottom\, turned into a Donkey\, becomes the object of the Fairy Queen’s affection – a perfect illustration of the adage ‘love is blind’! \nBut all’s well that ends well\, with our lovers reconciled in a wedding celebration set to Mendelssohn’s beautiful ‘Wedding March’ that concludes the performance. \nPraised for productions that are ‘magical’ (Culture Spot )\, ‘mesmerizing’ (LA Beat )\, and ‘a work of art\,’ ‘very professional\,’ and ‘choreographed to perfection’ (Meet Up )\, LA Ballet Academy’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream is a dance event not to be missed. One performance only!

SUMMARY:GAGIK VARDANYAN exhibit RIZOMA at Roslin Art Gallery
DESCRIPTION:RIZOMA is a philosophical concept that apprehends multiplicities and opposes hierarchic\, tree-like conceptions of knowledge. It presents history and culture as a wide array of influences with no specific origin. Gagik Vardanyan’s art and life encapsulates this experience. Born in Soviet Armenia\, Vardanyan grew up and received his education in a socialist\, yet homogeneous environment. As he moved to Buenos Aires in his late thirties\, Vardanyan became exposed to a cornucopia of new experiences and cultures\, filling his palette with an array of possibilities. Vardanyan’s pieces transcend boundaries\, mixing cultures\, histories\, communities\, as well as physical planes and directions. From figures of Lenin\, queer amigas\, European harlequins\, and pagan satyrs\, faces and spaces exist simultaneously in different planes and colors. There is no beginning nor end\, no up nor down. Rather\, a celebration of the essence and simultaneity of all things.\n\n \nGAGIK VARDANYAN is an Argentinian-Armenian artist and muralist. He was born in Yerevan\, Armenia in 1960. He attended the State University of Fine Arts from 1975-1978 and graduated from the National Academy of Armenian Arts in 1985. In 1999\, Vardanyan moved to Buenos Aires\, Argentina with his family. He has exhibited in various halls in Armenia\, Russia\, Germany\, Argentina and the United States. Vardanyan has also been commissioned to paint a number of murals in cathedrals and monuments in Argentina\, Uruguay\, Brazil\, and the United States. In 2018\, Vardanyan and his family moved to Glendale\, California.\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nPresented by Roslin Art Gallery.

SUMMARY:Meli Sarkissian presents LAKE OF SIGHS
DESCRIPTION:LAKE OF SIGHS is a novel inspired by the Armenian legend of Akhtamar. This tragedy hangs over the head of the current princess Tamar. Named after the young woman from the legend\, Princess Tamar lives on the same island as her namesake. She has no wish for her own life to repeat the tale of doomed love. Aleena\, her sister\, tells her she must forge her own path—even if it means taking a risk. Princess Tamar isn’t so sure. The thought of falling in love only to lose her beloved is too much to bear\, so she throws herself into art: fairy tales\, music\, and dance. Her passions take her to a folk dance group\, where she meets a man who shares her zest for life. But can their growing love protect him from the fate foretold by legend?\n\n\n\n\nMELI SARKISSIAN holds a bachelor’s degree in European studies and psychology and is currently earning a master’s degree in forensic psychology. Born in Cyprus\, Sarkissian was raised into an Armenian family whose proud traditions\, particularly the folk-dance group that Sarkissian was a part of\, sparked the inspiration for this novel.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPresented by Abril Bookstore. Author MELI SARKISSIAN will present her first novel inspired by the tale of Akhtamar titled\, LAKE OF SIGHS on TUESDAY\, JULY 17\, 2018 at 7:30pm at ABRIL BOOKSTORE – 415 E. SUMMARY:Abril Bookstore presents BOGHOS SHAHMELIKIAN'S NEW BOOK: DAWN OF ARMENIAN POP MUSIC
DESCRIPTION:Author and member of the Five Fingers Band\, BOGHOS SHAHMELIKIAN will present the newly translated English edition of his book\, DAWN OF ARMENIAN POP MUSIC on THURSDAY\, JULY 26\, 2018 at 7:30pm at ABRIL BOOKSTORE – 415 E. Broadway\, Glendale\, CA. Author will be introduced by Harout Arakelian. Admission is free with reception to follow.\n\n \n\n\n\nDAWN OF ARMENIAN POP MUSIC narrates the evolution of the post Genocide contemporary Armenian popular music in the Diaspora\, commonly referred to as pop music. The Armenian word for it would be estradayin. Starting from the early 1960’s a host of Armenian singers and musical bands appeared on stage in Lebanon using for the first time non-traditional instruments such as guitar\, percussion drum-sets\, electronic organ (keyboards)\, saxophone and the like ushering the Armenian music onto a new era away from its Ottoman influences. The ‘invasion’ of these musical bands lasted until the mid-1970’s and tapered off with the onset of the Lebanese Civil war having altered the popular Armenian music. His narration makes for a fascinating reading.\n\n\nBOGHOS SHAHMELIKIAN was born in Beirut. He is a retired musician who has played with many bands and in many countries but primarily with the Five Fingers Band. He attended Nshan Palanjian Jemaran and graduated from Mekhitarian High School. He resides in Los Angeles with his wife and son and is a regular literary contributor to “Aztag” Daily and “Hairenik” Weekly.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPresented by Abril Bookstore.

SUMMARY:Armenian Film Society and Abril Bookstore present ECHOES OF SURVIVAL
DESCRIPTION:Abril Bookstore’s ARMENIAN FILM SOCIETY will present a screening of ECHOES OF SURVIVAL\, a new documentary film featuring artists Jackie Kazarian\, Ara Dinkjian\, Ara Oshagan\, Scout Tufankjian\, and John Berberian\, followed by a discussion with director\, AVO JOHN KAMBOURIAN on FRIDAY\, AUGUST 3\, 2018 at 7:30pm at ABRIL BOOKSTORE – 415 E. Broadway\, Glendale\, CA. Admission for Armenian Film Society members only. Please call (818) 243-4112 for details.\n\nECHOES OF SURVIVAL is an experimental documentary series about the ambiguity of what it means to be an Armenian living in America today. In April 2015\, during the 100th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide\, the author found himself drawn to the idea of how certain artists around the United States view themselves as Armenian\, and how their identities shape their work. This project is an attempt to better understand who we are today\, and how the culture has survived through these artists and their work.\n\n\n\nAVO JOHN KAMBOURIAN was born and raised in Los Angeles. He picked up a camera at age 10 and cast his friends in comedic short films about Batman. Later he picked up editing while still in high school. In 2010\, he traveled to Armenia\, where he had an internship at Bars Media Studio\, a documentary company. Upon returning to the US he earned his BA in Communication at UC San Diego. In subsequent years he returned to Armenia in between jobs as a PA\, Assistant Editor\, to work on his own documentaries about the region. Avo John works in post-production as an editor\, having worked for companies such as Vice\, Nat Geo\, Hit RECord\, and BMG Films.\n  \n\n\nPresented by the Armenian Film Society and Abril Bookstore.
