SUMMARY:The Alex Film Society Presents Hollywood Scares
DESCRIPTION:The 2017 Alex Film Society Halloween Event will feature a full length Quiz Show Production of Hollywood Scares!…a classic\, “all ghoul” send-up of the long running Hollywood Squares.  Writer\, actor and stand-up comedian Dana Gould will join forces with Bob Burns\, Janet Varney\, Tom Kenny and Frank Dietz\, for an evening of fun and spirited competition.  Subject to availability\, these actors\, stand up comics and “SuperFans” with test their wits against a battery of challenging horror and sc-fi film trivia questions. \nWant to try your luck?  What was the name of Dr. Frankenstein’s twisted\, hunchbacked assistant in the famous 1931 Universal classic?  If you said Igor…you’re out! And by the way…what was the good Doctor’s first name?  That’s easy…Henry. \nBut wait…there’s more.  As always\, AFS will present a classic animated short and feature film.  This year’s Bugs Bunny cartoon\, A Witch’s Tangle Hare (1959) salutes the late June Foray\, the female Voice Artist who’s recent passing (at 99!) closed a career that encompassed radio\, animation\, television\, feature films and recording. \nThe evening will be capped off by a rare screening of Brides of Dracula (1960)\, a vintage horror film produced by Hammer Films. \nIn the late 1950s\, London based Hammer brought exciting new life to the horror film genre.  Now\, all the old favorites could be re-imagined in bold colors and wider screen formats.  In quick succession\, Frankenstein\, Dracula and the Mummy all got new productions that proved box office gold for the English producers and their American distributors. \nBrides of Dracula (1960) was the first follow-up to Horror of Dracula (1958) in a series that would eventually include eight titles.  Many fans consider it one of the greatest in the Hammer canon. The scenery is beautiful\, the well-constructed plot has globs of gothic perversity\, the ladies are as lovely as ever and Peter Cushing is at the top of his game. \nUniversal controls the American rights to this highly praised\, but infrequently screened classic and their records indicate a good quality 35MM print to enjoy on the Alex Theatre’s big screen. \nSo join us to find out the real name of Baron Frankenstein’s demonic assistant…and no fair searching the internet!

SUMMARY:The Glendale International Film Festival Opening Night Gala & Screening of "The Godfather"
DESCRIPTION:The Glendale International Film Festival kicks off its 4th Annual Film Festival with an opening night gala and red carpet screening of THE GODFATHER\, celebrating the 45th Anniversary of the film’s premiere. Widely regarded as one of the greatest films of all time\, with 10 Academy Award Nominations and three wins for Best Picture\, Best Actor and Best Screenplay Adaptation\, THE GODFATHER makes its Alex Theatre screen debut for this one night only event. Based upon Mario Puzo’s classic novel of the same name\, the story focuses on the powerful Italian-American crime family of Don Vito Corleone (Marlon Brando). When the Don’s youngest son\, Michael (Al Pacino)\, reluctantly joins the Mafia\, he becomes involved in the inevitable cycle of violence and betrayal. Although Michael tries to maintain a normal relationship with his wife\, Kay (Diane Keaton)\, he is drawn deeper into the family business. \nPre-Screening reception is your chance to mix and mingle with the many screenwriters\, filmmakers and VIPs participating in this year’s film festival. Post-screening\, attendees will get a chance to be a part of a Q&A about the film followed by a short cocktail reception in the Alex Theatre Forecourt. \nThe Glendale International Film Festival is a private non-profit organization whose mission is to show quality films which tell a story by using outstanding dialogue free from the common expletive ridden fare and honoring women film makers and screenwriters from around the world with the emphasis upon the local Glendale film maker and screenwriter. The theme of the festival is ‘All Creatures Great and Small from the Animal Kingdom (especially Cats\, Dogs and Horses!).’ Now in its 4th year\, GIFF will be contributing 20% of the proceeds from the festival to Glendale/La Canada/La Crescenta public schools and Glendale Community College for film making and screenwriting programs.

SUMMARY:Musical Theatre Guild Presents SUGAR
DESCRIPTION:Musical Theatre Guild presents a staged concert version of\nSUGAR \nMusic: Jule Styne\nLyrics: Bob Merrill\nBook: Peter Stone\nBased on screenplay Some Like It Hot by Billy Wilder & I.A.L. Diamond \nWhat some guys won’t do to get the job….or the girl!’ In 1959 Lemmon\, Curtis and Monroe lit up the silver screen in Billy Wilder’s classic comedy Some Like It Hot. In 1972 theatre creative giants Styne\, Merrill and Stone transformed the property into a new musical titled SUGAR. Set in prohibition-era Chicago and Miami\, SUGAR tells the story of two unemployed musicians\, Joe and Jerry\, who\, after witnessing a mob murder\, go undercover as women and join an all-female band. Complications ensue when Joe (now Josephine) falls for the beautiful band singer\, Sugar Kane. Watch out for gangsters along the way! It would be a DRAG if you missed it!

SUMMARY:HOME TOUR: "CALIFORNIA CRAFTSMAN: GLENDALE'S VANISHING HERITAGE"
DESCRIPTION:LOCATION\nTo be provided at event check-in. \nADMISSION\nAdvance Tickets\nMembers: $30   I   Non-members: $40\nAfter September 19\nMembers: $35   I   Non-members: $45 \nTickets may be purchased through Glendale Arts. \nNOTE:\nDay of the event ticket purchases are available at the Alex Theatre Box Office (map) from 9:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. \nDETAILS\nThe tour will showcase five homes built between 1902 and 1915 that illustrate the evolution and variety of the Craftsman style. \nThe Craftsman style was born out of the late 19th Century British Arts and Crafts movement\, which emphasized local natural materials and handcrafted woodwork and decorative items\, and became a prevalent architectural style up until the 1920s in communities throughout much of the American West – including Glendale. Many of the streets in and adjacent to Glendale’s downtown and other residential neighborhoods were once lined with charming Craftsman homes that were built for a burgeoning middle class. Over the years\, Glendale lost much of its inventory of Craftsmans due to lack of proper development oversight and lax zoning codes. Sadly\, that trend continues today as Craftsman homes are being demolished to make way for new high-density residential development. \nFortunately\, Glendale still has many outstanding Craftsman homes\, and five of them are featured on this year’s Home Tour\, including: \n\n“Harris House” – A magnificent and rare 1902 Transitional Victorian/Craftsman home listed on the Glendale Register of Historic Resources that embodies a stylistic shift in residential architecture as elaborate Victorian forms and details evolved into the simpler qualities of the Craftsman style.\n“Tatum House” – A distinctive one-and-one-half story 1908 Arts and Crafts style residence with a delightful front porch that sits atop a battered fieldstone foundation\, likely quarried from the local Verdugo or San Gabriel mountains.\n“Dora Verdugo House” – A 1911 Craftsman\, most likely a Henry L. Wilson-designed “kit house\,” built by Dora Verdugo and her husband Walter Bullock. The home is being meticulously restored by the current owners. Dora was the great-granddaughter of Jose Maria Verdugo\, the original grantee of Rancho San Rafael\, which encompassed large portions of modern-day Glendale and adjacent communities.\n“Worley House” –  A quintessential Craftsman Bungalow built in 1914 with a generous porch that wraps around the front and side of the house beneath a cross-gable roof\, which is supported on both sides by battered square wood columns set on dark granite stone piers.\n“Beggs House” – A lovely two-story Airplane Bungalow/Craftsman built in 1915 and moved to its current location in 1925. The house\, which has been nominated to the Glendale Register\, retains many original period details throughout. It has a shallow front gable roof with vertical wood slat gable vents that extend over a large porch supported on substantial square columns set on unusual ruffle brick pedestals connected by a wood banister.\n\nFor more information\, email events@glendalehistorical.org. \nIMPORTANT TOUR INFORMATION\nGuests will drive themselves to the featured houses for docent-led tours of each home. Some houses have stairs. Not all portions of the homes will be open for the tour. The tour will be held regardless of weather. Tickets are non-refundable.
