SUMMARY:Vahan Setyan to present new book about Armenian Origins of Basque
DESCRIPTION:Glendale\, CA – Author VAHAN SETYAN will be in town to present his newly released book\, ARMENIAN ORIGINS OF BASQUE: A Linguistic Verdict on FRIDAY\, FEBRUARY 16\, 2018 at 7:30pm at ABRIL BOOKSTORE – 415 E. The book provides a detailed look at Basque-Armenian parallels and their suspicious omission in academia. By providing extensive research materials in support of Basque-Armenian language connectedness\, the book rivals the skepticism of linguists\, mathematicians and historians alike.  \nVahan Setyan is an independent researcher who has been on numerous television and radio shows on topics such as ancient history and comparative linguistics. He has examined the Armenian language within ancient civilizations\, finding strong evidence of its prehistoric nature and its critical contribution to the formations of many other languages throughout the world. SUMMARY:Musical Theatre Guild Presents HIGH SOCIETY
DESCRIPTION:Musical Theatre Guild presents a staged concert version of\nHIGH SOCIETY \nMusic and Lyrics: Cole Porter\nBook: Arthur Kopit\nBased on Philip Barry’s 1939 stage comedy The Philadelphia Story and subsequent 1956 musical film adaptation\, High Society. \nIn 1956\, Bing Crosby\, Frank Sinatra and the stunning Grace Kelly brought this musical adaptation of Philip Barry’s The Philadelphia Story to life on the silver screen\, where it featured a sparkling score by musical master Cole Porter. This 1988 Broadway adaptation takes Porter even further by pouring more of his classic tunes into the party punchbowl than you can sing in one night. But we will! The plot centers on pretentious socialite Tracy Samantha Lord\, who is planning to wed an equally pretentious executive when her ex-husband arrives to disrupt the proceedings. You’re invited to this non-stop romp of great Porter songs and mismatched romances. which includes most of the music featured in the 1956 movie. ‘Well\, Did You Evah? What a swell party this is!’

SUMMARY:COFFEESCAPES: from Cup to Canvas
DESCRIPTION:Anush Movsesian Avejic’s coffee inspired art to be exhibited at Roslin Art Gallery\n\n \n\n\nGlendale\, CA – COFFEESCAPES: from Cup to Canvas\, a unique collection of art inspired by and created with Armenian coffee by artist ANUSH MOVSESIAN AVEJIC will be on exhibit from JANUARY 18 – 31\, 2018 at ROSLIN ART GALLERY – 415 E. Broadway\,  Glendale\, CA.  Gallery hours are from 10:00am to 7:00pm\, Monday through Saturday. Opening reception will be on Thursday\, January 18 at 7:00pm.  Closing reception will be on Wednesday\, January 31 at 7:00pm with a conversation with the artist followed by private coffee reading sessions.  Admission is free. \n\n\n \n\n\nCOFFEESCAPES are exploded views of coffee readings. Anush Movsesian Avejic has always been intrigued with the beautiful lines and both negative and positive space on the walls of the overturned Armenian coffee cups – each cup holding a message and a mini abstract work of art. In the early 90’s\, while undergoing cancer treatment\, she had the idea of recreating the fortune inside her cup using Armenian coffee as her medium. Her first canvas was one of angels and hope and was ten times the size of her cup – six feet in length. Her coffee paintings take something as temporary as a cup of coffee and the fortune the cup holds\, and create permanence of that moment in time. She will gladly paint your fortune for you. But it’s not only about the fortune but rather the entire process – from the brewing of the coffee\, to enjoying a delicious cup with a friend. It’s a communal activity steeped in tradition. Whether you believe in the reading or not\, you see the interior of the cup as a thing of unique beauty. Also included in the show are other coffee based art pieces\, as well as some of Anush’s drawings\, paintings and handmade pomegranate jewelry. \nAnush Movsesian Avejic is an American-born Armenian artist living in Southern California. She studied graphic design and illustration at Cal-State Los Angeles. She has illustrated two children’s books\, When I Go to Church and When I Was Baptized. She has always had an eye for detail which has served as her inspiration. Anush’s home studio is where she creates not only her drawings and paintings\, but also her unique handmade silver\, copper and bronze pomegranate jewelry for her company\, Pomegranate & Eye. Pomegranates are a recurring theme in her art and evoke childhood memories of growing up Armenian in America.\n\n\n \n\n\n\nPresented by Roslin Art Gallery.\n\n\n### \n\nCONTACT: Arno Yeretzian at Roslin Art Gallery (818) 241-0611.

SUMMARY:"i am": Holocaust Exhibit Opening @ Glendale's Downtown Central ReflectSpace Gallery
DESCRIPTION:ReflectSpace Gallery @ Downtown Central Library \n  \nDec 9\, 2017 – Jan 17\, 2018 \n  \nOpening Reception + Artist Talk \nSaturday\, Dec 9\, 2017 \nReception: 6-8 pm \nJeffrey Wolin talk @ 7 pm \n  \nReflectSpace at Downtown Central Library in Glendale and the Los Angeles Museum of the Holocaust (LAMOTH) present “i am: Narratives of the Holocaust” an exhibition that brings together contemporary photography and rare artifacts/archives to examine various narratives of survival and identity created during the Holocaust and later. “i am” explores the core genocidal process of de-humanization and presents works from an inclusive and deeply personal perspective that affirm as well as disrupt traditional narratives of inheritance of historical violence. \n  \n“i am: Narratives of the Holocaust” runs from December 8\, 2017 to January 17\, 2018. The opening is Saturday\, December 9th from 6 – 8 pm and will include an artist talk with Jeffrey Wolin at 7 pm. “i am” is co-curated by Ara and Anahid Oshagan of ReflectSpace and Eric Hall of LAMOTH. \n  \n“i am” explores notions of identity and identification—person\, place\, time—and de-humanization during the Holocaust through a rare collection of artifacts from the LAMOTH. Identification armbands\, numbers and symbols worn by prisoners of concentration camps and identity cards (often stamped with a letter for further classification) from a multitude of European countries are on display. Their owners range from a broad cross-section of groups persecuted by the Nazis: Jews\, Jehovah’s Witnesses\, Romani gypsies\, political prisoners\, habitual offenders\, the LGBTQ community. \n  \nAn extraordinary instance of identification—through portraiture—was made by 21-year old artist Dina Gottliebova Babbitt. In 1944\, while imprisoned at Auschwitz\, she was recruited by the infamous Nazi doctor Josef Mengele to draw portraits of Romani inmates subject to horrific medical experimentations. “i am” presents four of her Romani watercolors that are simultaneously portraitures of identification and an intervention to enable her own survival. The Auschwitz museum retains her original work\, we present the only available reproductions donated to the LAMOTH by the artist. The subdued color and unsettling beauty of these portraits run counter to all intuitions of that dark time. \n  \nSimilarly against-the-grain and disruptive of the traditional narratives of sites of trauma are contemporary artist James Friedman’s vivid color photographs of Holocaust sites from his series “12 Nazi Concentration Camps.” Friedman rejects the tendency to picture these sites of depravity\, torture and murder in somber black and white; instead his work explodes with color and documents the often surprising juxtapositions of the mundane activities at these sites in the 1980s with the historical memory of the horrors that occurred there. Including himself in many of his images\, Friedman’s work places the second and third generation witness at the very center of the spaces occupied by the Holocaust and forces viewers to reconsider their perceptions of these sites of unimaginable violence. \n  \nPhotographic artist Jeffrey Wolin is also a post-Holocaust witness. Sourced from a deeply personal space\, his series “Written in Memory” merges photography with testimony and creates a different kind of identity of the survivor. He makes portraits of Holocaust survivors and writes their testimony directly onto the photographs. Here the visual and textual narratives are intractably intertwined and present a world of witnessing where the present-day context is wiped out and the narrative/testimony takes its place. The work alludes to the core identity of survivors: their inability to imagine themselves outside their survival. \n  \nRounding out “i am” in ReflectSpace is an impossible remnant from the Holocaust. Selma and Chaim met at Sobibor camp. They did not speak each other’s language but fell in love. During the Sobibor camp uprising\, they somehow found each other and escaped. They went into hiding for two years and during that time\, they wrote a diary. Of the 160\,000 prisoners at Sobibor\, only a few hundred survived and none but Selma and Chaim kept a diary. Their diary\, every single page\, in its actual size and in totality\, is reproduced and presented in “i am” as an installation: a statement of “presence” and a narrative of survival. Selma and Chaim’s diary digital scans are courtesy of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. \n  \nExpanding on the themes of “i am”\, original artwork from Erich Lichtblau-Leskly’s They Shall be Counted\, a pictorial diary of ghetto life\, will be displayed in the PassageWay\, on loan from LAMOTH. Lichtbau-Leskly was deported to Theresiendstadt Ghetto where he made graphic pictorial narratives depicting ghetto life. He hid the diary’s sketches\, watercolors and graphics in the floorboards in his barracks and was able to retrieve them after liberation. Later\, he re-worked them into larger images. His ironic and deeply-felt pre and post pictorial narratives are displayed alongside each other in the PassageWay gallery. Also available will be Lichtblau-Leskly’s book\, They Shall be Counted\, published by LAMOTH. \n  \n  \nDowntown Central Library \nGlendale \n222 E.
