SUMMARY:Groundbreaking Armenian/LGBTQIA Art Exhibit Opens Worldwide Submissions
DESCRIPTION:Glendale\, CA – Roslin Art Gallery\, the Gay and Lesbian Armenian Society (GALAS) and Abril Bookstore have joined forces in organizing a first of its kind art exhibition in June 2018 titled\, THE MANY FACES OF ARMENIANS: A Celebration of Queer-Armenian Art\, to be held during LGBT Pride Month at Roslin Art Gallery in Glendale\, CA. Submissions for artwork are now open.\nExperiences of queerness and/or otherness are common to both Armenian and LGBTQIA+ communities\, who share a history of oppression under different contexts. In a diverse city such as Los Angeles\, the experiences of being queer or other are constantly evolving\, while in different parts of the world\, they remain taboo. The purpose of this exhibit is to bring these experiences to light and\, ultimately\, to celebrate what is considered to be queer or other. \n \nThis is a call to all artists of Armenian descent\, whether or not you identify as LGBTQIA+\, to submit artwork that embodies notions of queerness and/or otherness. The deadline for submissions is April 27\, 2018. Each artist may display up to 3 works of art. Selected artists will be notified by May 7. Participants will be responsible for shipping their works. All submissions should include a one paragraph bio\, an artist statement about the work and at least 3 images of each piece – showing the full image and details. Works will be made available for sale.\n \nBoth GALAS and Abril Bookstore are celebrating milestone anniversaries this year. GALAS is celebrating its 20th year of fostering a safe and supportive network for LGBTQ people of Armenian descent. Over the course of two decades\, the organization has been at the forefront in raising awareness to empower the worldwide LGBTQ Armenian community and champion equality.  Abril Bookstore is celebrating 40 years of service as a cultural hub to the Armenian community of Los Angeles\, providing a source of knowledge and a space for a variety of activities.  Collaborations between such organizations are aimed at building crucial bridges between the LGBTQ and Armenian communities.\nEmail inquiries and submissions to: queerhyeart@gmail.com or call Roslin Art Gallery at (818) 241-0611.\n\n###\nCONTACT: Arno Yeretzian at Roslin Art Gallery (818) 241-0611 /queerhyeart@gmail.com

SUMMARY:Gyumri artist Hovik Aghekyan to exhibit at Roslin Art Gallery
DESCRIPTION:Glendale\, CA – Roslin Art Gallery will exhibit the work of Armenian artist from Gyumri\, HOVIK AGHEKYAN\, at an upcoming show titled\, From Gyumri to Glendale\, donating a portion of the sales to The Terchoonian Home Orphanage of Gyumri\, from MARCH 1 – 17\, 2018 at 415 E. Broadway\,  Glendale\, CA.  Gallery hours are from 10:00am to 7:00pm\, Monday through Saturday. Opening reception will be on Thursday\, March 1 at 7:00pm.  Closing reception will be on Saturday\, March 17 at 7:00pm with a conversation with the artist in Armenian.  Admission is free. \n\n\n\n \n\nThe ancient city of Gyumri has always been a place of comedy and tragedy. Although its name has changed throughout history\, its culture and people have thrived and blossomed. With their distinct folklore and humor\, the people of Gyumri have dealt with countless blows and hardships coming their way. One of the most recent events marking the city is the terrifying earthquake of 1988. More than 10\,000 people were killed\, many of them children\, and the city was left in ruins. The art of Hovik Aghekyan is an outcome of this tragicomic city. He has coped with loss through art. His colorful abstractions paradoxically bring order to the destruction around him and attempt to make sense of the chaos. Within the haze of his drawings lies a focus\, a focus of the splendor and laughter of the people and places of the past and future. The sharp contrasting worlds of the black and the white come together in harmony. In 2015\, Gyumri and Glendale became sister cities. Through this exhibit\, we are honored to celebrate the creations of this remarkable artist and to bring our two cities together.HOVIK AGHEKYAN was born in 1957 in Gyumri\, Armenia (formerly known as Leninakan). He attended the art school named after Merkurov in Gyumri and graduated in 1972. He continued his education with a Master’s Degree in History at the yerevan State University\, graduating in 1979. Aghekyan has participated in many exhibitions in Gyumri. He has worked at the “Kumayri” Reserve-Museum and lectured at the Gyumri Arts Academy as well as the Gyumri Pedagogical Institute. He currently works at the Shirak Geology Museum and is in charge of drawing all archaeological findings.THE TERCHOONIAN HOME ORPHANAGE OF GYUMRI opened its doors in the fall of 2003. This was made possible by a generous donation in the name of the late Vahan Terchoonian by his family\, to establish an orphanage in Gyumri (Alexandropol)\, Armenia. This was the same city Terchoonian found refuge in after escaping from Turkey\, before he eventually immigrated to the United States. Today\, there are 74 children and a staff of 54.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPresented by Roslin Art Gallery.\n\n### \n\nCONTACT: Arno Yeretzian at Roslin Art Gallery (818) 241-0611.

Admission is free with reception to follow.  For more information\, call (818) 243-4112.\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nVAN 1915 is an account of an epic struggle that took place in Ottoman Turkey during WWI. As Ottoman authorities moved to destroy Armenians (in what came to be known as the Armenian Genocide of 1915)\, many Armenians organized their self-defense by barricading themselves in towns and villages and fought back. The greatest battle took place in the city of Van\, where over 30\,000 Armenian civilians survived and were rescued by the advancing Russian armies. Author A. Do (Hovhannes Ter Martirosian) personally investigated the events in question and described many incidents in their harrowing detail.  The book was published in Armenian in 1917. This is the first English translation of that work and includes a new introduction and over 50 maps and illustrations.\n\nARA SARAFIAN is a historian specializing in the late Ottoman Empire and modern Turkey. He is a founding director of the Gomidas Institute in London\, and has edited and written critical introductions to several of the institute’s publications.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPresented by Abril Bookstore.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n###\n\n\n\n\nCONTACT: Arno Yeretzian at Abril Bookstore (818) 243-4112\, noor@abrilbooks.com

SUMMARY:Vahan Setyan to present new book about Armenian Origins of Basque
DESCRIPTION:Glendale\, CA – Author VAHAN SETYAN will be in town to present his newly released book\, ARMENIAN ORIGINS OF BASQUE: A Linguistic Verdict on FRIDAY\, FEBRUARY 16\, 2018 at 7:30pm at ABRIL BOOKSTORE – 415 E. Broadway\, Glendale\, CA. Admission is free. Reserved priority seating available at www.itsmyseat.com/abrilbooks or by calling (818) 243-4112.\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArmenian Origins of Basque pays tribute to the monumental work of late Vahan Sarkisian\, a Linguist who immensely contributed to Basque studies. The book provides a detailed look at Basque-Armenian parallels and their suspicious omission in academia. By providing extensive research materials in support of Basque-Armenian language connectedness\, the book rivals the skepticism of linguists\, mathematicians and historians alike.  \nVahan Setyan is an independent researcher who has been on numerous television and radio shows on topics such as ancient history and comparative linguistics. He has examined the Armenian language within ancient civilizations\, finding strong evidence of its prehistoric nature and its critical contribution to the formations of many other languages throughout the world. Setyan is the author ofLanguage as a Fingerprint: Perspectives on Cradle of Civilization and the Armenian Language.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPresented by Abril Bookstore.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n###\n\n\n\n\nCONTACT: Arno Yeretzian at Abril Bookstore (818) 243-4112\, noor@abrilbooks.com

SUMMARY:Musical Theatre Guild Presents HIGH SOCIETY
DESCRIPTION:Musical Theatre Guild presents a staged concert version of\nHIGH SOCIETY \nMusic and Lyrics: Cole Porter\nBook: Arthur Kopit\nBased on Philip Barry’s 1939 stage comedy The Philadelphia Story and subsequent 1956 musical film adaptation\, High Society. \nIn 1956\, Bing Crosby\, Frank Sinatra and the stunning Grace Kelly brought this musical adaptation of Philip Barry’s The Philadelphia Story to life on the silver screen\, where it featured a sparkling score by musical master Cole Porter. This 1988 Broadway adaptation takes Porter even further by pouring more of his classic tunes into the party punchbowl than you can sing in one night. But we will! The plot centers on pretentious socialite Tracy Samantha Lord\, who is planning to wed an equally pretentious executive when her ex-husband arrives to disrupt the proceedings. You’re invited to this non-stop romp of great Porter songs and mismatched romances. which includes most of the music featured in the 1956 movie. ‘Well\, Did You Evah? What a swell party this is!’
