Cash awards total over $4\,000 including a Juror’s Award. All accepted artworks will be included in a printed exhibition catalog. Our juror this year is Edward Goldman\, a Los Angeles-based art critic well-known for his weekly show\, “Art Talk”\, on local NPR affiliate KCRW and as a regular contributor to the Huffington Post. Born and educated in Russia\, Edward is noted for his fearless and fun opinions and im­passioned views on what he sees in galleries and museums throughout the world. As a supporter of art collecting\, Edward teaches a popular series of classes called “The Fine Art of Art Collecting” which features visits to artist studios\, galleries and museums\, and the homes of private collectors. Broadway\, Glendale\, CA.  The author will be introduced by Armine Koundakjian  Program will be in Armenian. Admission is free with reception to follow. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\nHovhannes Tumanyan and Ishkhanuhi Mariam presents the story of the intimate relationship between the two. Ishkhanuhi Mariam was Tumanyan’s benefactor.  Born from the line of Meliks of Artsakh\, Ishkhanuhi was a highly erudite and promient figure in Tiflis.  She was highly active in the worlds of arts and culture and had a prominent role to play in the emotional well-being of Tumanyan\, especially during his most difficult years.  \n \nMtker (Thoughts) is a collection of pieces taken from Tumanyan’s literary works and letters.  It contains philosophical passages that are full of life and wisdom pertaining to arts\, politics\, peoples\, and governments. \n  \n\nNARINE TUKHIKYAN-KHACHATURYAN was born in Yerevan. She graduated from the school of philology at the Yerevan State University. A co-commission by LACO\, St. Paul Chamber Orchestra and Minnesota Orchestra\, Jalbert’s work was written specifically for the three orchestras’ concertmasters. SUMMARY:Groundbreaking Armenian/LGBTQIA Art Exhibit Opens Worldwide Submissions
DESCRIPTION:Glendale\, CA – Roslin Art Gallery\, the Gay and Lesbian Armenian Society (GALAS) and Abril Bookstore have joined forces in organizing a first of its kind art exhibition in June 2018 titled\, THE MANY FACES OF ARMENIANS: A Celebration of Queer-Armenian Art\, to be held during LGBT Pride Month at Roslin Art Gallery in Glendale\, CA. Submissions for artwork are now open.\nExperiences of queerness and/or otherness are common to both Armenian and LGBTQIA+ communities\, who share a history of oppression under different contexts. In a diverse city such as Los Angeles\, the experiences of being queer or other are constantly evolving\, while in different parts of the world\, they remain taboo. The purpose of this exhibit is to bring these experiences to light and\, ultimately\, to celebrate what is considered to be queer or other. \n \nThis is a call to all artists of Armenian descent\, whether or not you identify as LGBTQIA+\, to submit artwork that embodies notions of queerness and/or otherness. The deadline for submissions is April 27\, 2018. Each artist may display up to 3 works of art. Selected artists will be notified by May 7. Participants will be responsible for shipping their works. All submissions should include a one paragraph bio\, an artist statement about the work and at least 3 images of each piece – showing the full image and details. Works will be made available for sale.\n \nBoth GALAS and Abril Bookstore are celebrating milestone anniversaries this year. GALAS is celebrating its 20th year of fostering a safe and supportive network for LGBTQ people of Armenian descent. The GYO has played twice in recent years at the Walt Disney Concert Hall to great ovation. In 2011\, the GYO auditioned and was selected as a PRIMIER LA Phil Youth Orchestra. Our mission is based on the belief that our young people have a better chance of succeeding in their world if they appreciate and participate in its rich artistic and cultural traditions. GYO provides young musicians in grades 6-12 from all over L.A. County a unique opportunity to play classical music under the direction of Juilliard trained conductor Brad Keimach. The GYO has been a Resident Company of the Alex Theatre for 20 years. \nAndrew Gong attends Harvard-Westlake School as a ninth grader. He began playing the piano at age five and currently studies with renowned piano pedagogue Jenny Shin. Under her tutelage\, he has won many awards in state-wide and international competitions. These include the Southern California  Junior Bach Festival\, the MTAC State Solo Competition\, the MTAC LA Branch Scholarship Competition\, and the LA International Liszt Competition. Andrew also enjoys giving back to the community through music\, having performed free recitals for the homeless in Skid Row. Andrew is in his second season as the GYO’s principal percussionist. \nAnna Gong\, of Pasadena\, is a Senior at Harvard-Westlake School. She began learning the violin under her grandmother\, Lubin Yu\, and later on with her mother\, Bing Wang (Associate Concertmaster of the LA Philharmonic). Since joining the Glendale Youth Orchestra at the age of twelve\, this concert marks her fifth appearance as a soloist with the orchestra. At school she established the Cadence for a Cause\, a club that performs alongside Street Symphony (founded by LA Phil violinist Vijay Gupta) for homeless and underprivileged communities. Anna has won numerous top prizes in competitions hosted by the Music Teacher’s Association of California\, and she has also received second place in the state finals of the VOCE competition.

One of the most recent events marking the city is the terrifying earthquake of 1988. More than 10\,000 people were killed\, many of them children\, and the city was left in ruins.The art of Hovik Aghekyan is an outcome of this tragicomic city. He has coped with loss through art. His colorful abstractions paradoxically bring order to the destruction around him and attempt to make sense of the chaos. Within the haze of his drawings lies a focus\, a focus of the splendor and laughter of the people and places of the past and future. The sharp contrasting worlds of the black and the white come together in harmony. In 2015\, Gyumri and Glendale became sister cities. Through this exhibit\, we are honored to celebrate the creations of this remarkable artist and to bring our two cities together.HOVIK AGHEKYAN was born in 1957 in Gyumri\, Armenia (formerly known as Leninakan). He attended the art school named after Merkurov in Gyumri and graduated in 1972. He continued his education with a Master’s Degree in History at the yerevan State University\, graduating in 1979. Aghekyan has participated in many exhibitions in Gyumri. He has worked at the “Kumayri” Reserve-Museum and lectured at the Gyumri Arts Academy as well as the Gyumri Pedagogical Institute. He currently works at the Shirak Geology Museum and is in charge of drawing all archaeological findings.THE TERCHOONIAN HOME ORPHANAGE OF GYUMRI opened its doors in the fall of 2003. This was made possible by a generous donation in the name of the late Vahan Terchoonian by his family\, to establish an orphanage in Gyumri (Alexandropol)\, Armenia. Admission is free with reception to follow.  For more information\, call (818) 243-4112.\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nVAN 1915 is an account of an epic struggle that took place in Ottoman Turkey during WWI. As Ottoman authorities moved to destroy Armenians (in what came to be known as the Armenian Genocide of 1915)\, many Armenians organized their self-defense by barricading themselves in towns and villages and fought back. The greatest battle took place in the city of Van\, where over 30\,000 Armenian civilians survived and were rescued by the advancing Russian armies. Author A. Do (Hovhannes Ter Martirosian) personally investigated the events in question and described many incidents in their harrowing detail.  The book was published in Armenian in 1917. This is the first English translation of that work and includes a new introduction and over 50 maps and illustrations.\n\nARA SARAFIAN is a historian specializing in the late Ottoman Empire and modern Turkey. SUMMARY:GCC: Open auditions slated for spring theater production at GCC
DESCRIPTION:Open auditions for the “Marco Millions” by Eugene O’Neill will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Feb. 21 and 22 at Glendale Community College. \nThe spring production will be produced by the college’s theater arts department. \nThose auditioning should read and become familiar with the play\, which takes a satirical look at Marco Polo’s journeys to China\, ancient Persia and India. \nSides from the play will be read at the auditions. Those selected to perform in the production will be required to take two theater arts courses. \nStage managers and technical operators will also be needed for the production.
