DESCRIPTION:Musical Theatre Guild presents a staged concert version of\nMINNIE’S BOYS\n \nMusic: Larry Grossman\nLyrics: Hal Hackady\nBook: Arthur Marx and Robert Fisher \nBefore Mama Rose there was Minnie\, a super-Mom who was the driving force behind the famous Marx Brothers. A vaudeville performer herself\, Minnie coaxed\, pushed\, pulled\, and prodded the boys into their now-famous entity. Seldom seen but dearly loved\, this Larry Grossman/Hal Hackady tuneful and infectious score takes us through the zany early years of the brothers as they get their start in burlesque. You know their films\, but we bet you don’t know how it all started. \nAfter an unusually long preview period of 64 performances\, MINNIE’S BOYS opened in 1970 at Broadway’s Imperial Theatre. The musical\, which played a total of 80 regular performances\, was directed by Stanley Prager and starred Shelley Winters and Lewis J. Stadlen. The score includes the standout ‘Mama A Rainbow.’

DESCRIPTION:Following up its acclaimed\, sold-out 2018 celebration of Buffalo Springfield\, featuring founding member RICHIE FURAY\, The Wild Honey Orchestra & Friends will take on the 1968 masterpiece THE KINKS ARE THE VILLAGE GREEN PRESERVATION SOCIETY. Featuring full instrumentation and all-star guest vocalists\, Wild Honey will bring out all the textures of this brilliant\, though initially overlooked LP with the passion of true fans. In addition to the entirety of ‘Village Green’ LP\, Wild Honey will also play a glorious set of pre-1973 Kinks Klassics\, including songs from FACE TO FACE\, SOMETHING ELSE\, ARTHUR\, and many others. As in past years\, the Wild Honey Orchestra\, led by the genius Rob Laufer (also known for his work with George Martin’s productions of Sgt. Pepper at the Hollywood Bowl) will feature its usual all-star cast of LA musicians\, including another appearance by Elliot Easton from the Cars. As with previous Wild Honey Shows\, the profits will go to the Autism Think Tank\, NJ\, a stellar organization that helps families cope with the medical fallout from autism and provides them with cutting edge treatment options from the latest research. DESCRIPTION:INKPRESSIONS is the premiere United States exhibit showcasing the masterful and intricate works of art painstakingly created by artist Miranda Mehranian using her unique combination and selection of ink techniques such as hatching\, stippling and washing to bring about impressions dear to her heart and spirit. Mehranian takes the viewer on a voyage through ancient landscapes\, a rich tapestry of history\, and the wondrous and loving world of nature. Through hints and bursts of color\, Mehranian invites the viewer to become an active and colorful participant in this delightful world. \n \nMIRANDA MEHRANIAN was born in 1976 in Iran. She attended Armenian Maryam Institute in Tehran. Miranda obtained her degree in International Hospitality Management from the Strathclyde University in Tehran. The love of painting has been present in her from a very young age. She has studied art with well known Iranian painters such as the late Alousha Minassian and Smbat Abrahamian. She has taken private lessons from the very respected professor Vahid Sheykhian of the Fine Arts faculty at Tehran University. The Armenian Painter’s Association in Yerevan officially invited her to Armenia\, where she had her first solo exhibition in 2014. She was awarded honorary membership by the association. This recognition has encouraged her to focus more passionately on her art.\n \nPresented by Roslin Art Gallery.

DESCRIPTION:The Glendale Youth Orchestra (GYO) is celebrating 30 seasons as one of Los Angeles County’s leading youth orchestras. The GYO has played twice in recent years at the Walt Disney Concert Hall to great ovation. The 2011\, the GYO auditioned and was selected as a PREMIER LA Phil Youth Orchestra. Our Mission is based on the belief that our young people have a better chance of succeeding in their world if they appreciate and participate in its rich artistic and cultural traditions. GYO provides young musicians in grades 6-12 from all over L.A. County a unique opportunity to play classical music under the direction of Juilliard trained conductor Brad Keimach. DESCRIPTION:While the original Futurists in Italy applied their aesthetics and social practices of technology and the industrial city to diverse artistic mediums in order to emphasize a movement of youth and the “new\,” futurism as a term has since been tied to other movements using diverse genres in order to advance thought and artistic output. Notably\, Afrofuturism has long explored how aspects of the African diaspora relate to technology by employing philosophy\, science fiction among other forms to narrate a history and future that reflects an alternative imagining of culture.\nThe fate of Armenia and its own diaspora following the 1915 genocide saw a rapid dispersal of Armenians around the world\, creating an integration of global influences and experiences in the Armenian people. Generations later\, children of survivors of the genocide\, born in diverse parts of the world and with wide-ranging cultural and artistic influences\, have continued to alter their own histories – and futures – by inserting themselves into progressive artistic and scientific movements\, no matter where they established new life.\nThe artists gathered here represent a shared inspiration from a constant exchange of diverse ideologies and cultures in the diaspora\, each having created a unique sensitivity toward a certain future in their works. Their respective mediums – visual storytelling and graphic novels\, production architecture\, visual art\, design\, and music (cello) – tell a story of integrating history into a present image of reality in order to serve our collective future. These stories are fabricated both in the visual depictions of their imagery and music as well as the use of traditional materials and media of our present day.

SUMMARY:Brand Associates’ Dance Series
DESCRIPTION:The Brand Associates’ Dance Series presents three performances this spring at Brand Library & Art Center\, 1601 W. Mountain St.\, Glendale\, CA 91201. This series curated by Jame Nichols (Executive Producer and Founder of Celebrate Dance at the Alex Theatre)  presents top dance companies from Southern California performing site specific work in non-traditional performance spaces around Brand Library. These interactive events will be followed by a reception and an opportunity to meet the artists. Performances begin at 6pm FOR FREE. \nFUSE / Saturday\, April 27 / 6PM / FREE\nGRAYSCALE /  Saturday\, May 11 / 6PM / FREE\nVersa-Style / Saturday\, May 18 / 6PM / FREE \nFUSE Dance Company’s mission is to support and foster the growth and development of the performing arts in Southern California. FUSE will present “HOME\,” a collection of works that reflect family life and interpersonal connections. FUSE is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to support and foster the growth and development of the performing arts in Southern California through performances\, dance education\, and dance community collaboration programs. Through research and exploration\, FUSE develops an aesthetic that merges contemporary dance with other movement practices.The company was established by director Joshua D. Estrada-Romero in February of 2010. Since then FUSE has participated in many Southern California dance festivals and events including the Vox Dance Theatre Showcase in Los Angeles\, Raw Orange County Showcase\, MixMatch Dance Festival\, BlakTina Dance Festival\, Los Angeles Dance Festival\, and was a two-time finalist for the Choreography Festival at the McCallum Theatre. For four consecutive years FUSE has performed for the Lineage Dance Festival in Pasadena and The SoCal Dance Invitational produced by Nannette Brodie Dance Company and the Nebula’s HHII Dance Festival in Santa Barbara. FUSE has also been privileged to perform outside of California by participating in The Men in Dance Festival in Seattle WA\, the Dumbo Dance Festival in Brooklyn NY\, the Boston Contemporary Dance Festival in Boston MA\, and at the Ballet Austin Ventures Theatre in Austin TX. \nGRAYSCALE aims to explore the intimate connection between movement and the musical score\, GRAYSCALE also seeks to illuminate the relationship between the audience and the performer through bringing the viewers’ awareness to their participation in the dance by being present in the space created. Most recently\, artistic director Jessica Kondrath and the company have been involved in collaborations with visual artists and musicians in creating works for site-specific spaces. Formed in 2005 in New York City and currently located in Los Angeles\, CA\, GRAYSCALE has shown work throughout NYC\, Chicago\, and along the California coast at venues and festivals such as Triskelion Arts\, The Merce Cunningham Studios\, Baryshnikov Arts Center\, The D.U.M.B.O. Dance Festival\, Dance Mission Theater (San Francisco)\, Center Stage Theater (Santa Barbara)\, ARC Pasadena\, Detroit Dance City Festival\, and Dance Chicago\, among others.  As both artistic director of GRAYSCALE and faculty of El Camino College\, Jessica Kondrath has had works commissioned by CSU Long Beach\, CSU Fullerton\, Moorpark College\, El Camino College\, Santa Monica College\, CSU Fullerton\, and Momenta Performing Arts Company (Oak Park\, IL). \nFor over 13 years now Versa-Style has promoted the empowerment\, artistry\, and value of hip-hop dance culture through full-length street dance theater productions\, educational performances\, and deeply rooted social justice work in the community of Los Angeles. Versa-Style continues to uphold these values and thanks the creators of these powerful movements who continue to inspire us today by creating highly energetic work that fuses dances that are culturally significant to our community. Jackie Lopez aka Miss Funk & Leigh Foaad aka Breeze-lee are the Founders and Artistic Directors of Versa-Style Dance Company. Together they share a common passion for dance and performance\, this connection resulted in the creation of Versa-Style in 2005. These forms include Hip-Hop styles such as 90s Hip-Hop\, House\, Popping\, Locking\, Whacking and Boogaloo\, and Afro- Latin styles such as Salsa\, Merengue\, Cumbia and Afro-Cuban to name a few. As a reaction to the widespread media misrepresentation of these dance forms\, Versa-Style specifically aims to perform for the youth of Los Angeles to instill the roots\, history\, and social and political issues surrounding the art of our generation.Hip-Hop breaks color lines by creating a forum where people come together for a common passion rather than grouping themselves by race or socio-economic backgrounds. Versa-Style demonstrates freedom of expression\, freedom of individuality\, hard work\, self-discipline and dedication to the form. \nThe performances are free and open to the public. Seating is limited. An accessible entrance and parking is located on the East side of the building.
