SUMMARY:Author Leslie S. Klinger - Classic American Crime Fiction of the 1920s
DESCRIPTION:Classic American Crime Fiction of the 1920s is a riveting literary collection from Edgar-winning anthologist and mystery expert Leslie S. Klinger. “As an overview of American mystery fiction of the 1920s\, this wide-ranging anthology is peerless in providing readers with a bountiful selection of the most loved books of their time\, incalculably enhanced by the scholarship of the deftly produced annotations\,” writes eminent mystery publisher Otto Penzler in his lively introduction. \nAmerican crime writing was reborn in the 1920s. After years of dominance by British authors\, new American writers—with fresh ideas about the detective and the mystery—appeared on the scene and rose to heights of popularity not witnessed since the success of the Sherlock Holmes tales in America. The decade spawned the American “crime novel”—rather than focus on the capture of the criminal\, fiction explored his or her background and state of mind\, the circumstances of the crime and its consequences. The five novels—House Without a Key\, The Benson Murder Case\, The Roman Hat Mystery\, Red Harvest\, and Little Caesar—offer some of the very best of the decade’s writing. Klinger\, who is considered to be one of the world’s foremost authorities on Sherlock Holmes and nineteenth-century mystery fiction\, provides fascinating historical and cultural annotations along the way to enhance the reader’s understanding and enjoyment of these stories. \nKlinger’s The Annotated Sandman\, a four-volume edition of Neil Gaiman‘s award-winning The Sandman comics\, for DC Comics\, appeared in 2012;[2] the third volume was published in 2014\, and the fourth volume appeared in 2015. Watchmen: The Annotated Edition was edited by Klinger for DC Comics with Dave Gibbons\, using extensive material from Alan Moore‘s original scripts; the book was published in late 2017. He is a member of The Baker Street Irregulars\, as well as numerous other Sherlockian societies. He served three terms as chapter president of the Southern California chapter of the Mystery Writers of America. He is a member of Sisters in Crime\, the Horror Writers Association (and currently serves as the Treasurer of HWA)\, the Dracula Society\, and the Transylvanian Society of Dracula. \n\nEarl Derr Biggers wrote about Charlie Chan\, a Chinese-American detective\, at a time when racism was rampant.\nS. S. Van Dine invented Philo Vance\, an effete\, rich amateur psychologist who flourished while America danced and the stock market rose.\nThe quintessential American detective Ellery Queen leapt onto the stage\, to remain popular for fifty years.\nDashiell Hammett brought readers the first novel-length mystery narrated by the Continental Op.\nW. R. Burnett created the indelible character of Rico\, the first gangster antihero.\n\n\nVisitors to the Downtown Central Library receive 3 hours FREE parking across Harvard Street at the Marketplace parking structure with validation at the InfoSpace service desk on the main floor. Handicapped parking is available on the east side of the building. Short term parking spaces are available on the east and south sides of the building. SUMMARY:Artists For Kids Presents LORIK FILM BY MICHAEL POGHOSYAN
DESCRIPTION:Artists For Kids presents LORIK\, an Armenian language film by Michael Poghosyan. \nThe film’s protagonist is actor Lorik\, Laurence Olivier’s namesake. \nWhen Lorik was a child\, he lost his parents\, who also were actors. Raised by his aunt\, Lorik realizes his childhood dream and becomes an actor\, but he lives in the imaginary world of his roles. He is now Cyrano de Bergerac\, then King Richard. However\, the main role he plays is not performed on the stage but in the conduct of his own life: the Rabbit from ‘Alice in Wonderland.’ Lorik does not perceive today’s realities and is afraid of being himself\, so he hides behind the masks of his characters. He is indifferent to the opinions of others and lives only through the feelings of his characters. \nSociety\, meanwhile\, worries about completely different issues. Social inequality\, the crisis of the confidence in authorities\, and a sense of hopelessness are increasing in the society. \nWhen the theatre is closed by an owner indifferent to the fate of its actors\, it seems to Lorik that\, with the absence of the theater and his roles\, his life is over. But actually his real life is just beginning. After the shock\, something strange happens to Lorik. Is this a dream or a delusion? Lorik begins to be transformed externally into other people and has to live episodes from their lives\, all the while remaining the same Lorik internally. Those life episodes are not easy; they are real tests. Through them Lorik learns to understand and feel the happiness and pain of others as his own and to experience love. Thus the rebirth of his soul begins. \nPERFORMANCE ADVISORIES\nPerformance Language: Armenian with English Subtitles\nLate Seating: At discretion of the event’s Presenter

SUMMARY:Musical Theatre Guild presents MINNIE'S BOYS
DESCRIPTION:Musical Theatre Guild presents a staged concert version of\nMINNIE’S BOYS\n \nMusic: Larry Grossman\nLyrics: Hal Hackady\nBook: Arthur Marx and Robert Fisher \nBefore Mama Rose there was Minnie\, a super-Mom who was the driving force behind the famous Marx Brothers. A vaudeville performer herself\, Minnie coaxed\, pushed\, pulled\, and prodded the boys into their now-famous entity. Seldom seen but dearly loved\, this Larry Grossman/Hal Hackady tuneful and infectious score takes us through the zany early years of the brothers as they get their start in burlesque. You know their films\, but we bet you don’t know how it all started. \nAfter an unusually long preview period of 64 performances\, MINNIE’S BOYS opened in 1970 at Broadway’s Imperial Theatre. The musical\, which played a total of 80 regular performances\, was directed by Stanley Prager and starred Shelley Winters and Lewis J. Stadlen. The score includes the standout ‘Mama A Rainbow.’

SUMMARY:Alex Film Society Presents THE FRENCH CONNECTION (1971) STARRING GENE HACKMAN
DESCRIPTION:Arguably the greatest American crime film ever made\, THE FRENCH CONNECTION stars Gene Hackman and Roy Scheider as two NYPD detectives doggedly pursuing the ringleader of a global heroin smuggling syndicate (Fernando Rey). Based on real characters and loosely mimicking real events\, the film rebuffs political correctness to portray a grungy\, streetwise view of the mean streets of 1970s New York. Distinguished as the first R-rated film to win the Oscar® for Best Picture\, it also took home trophies for director (William Friedkin)\, best actor (Hackman)\, adapted screenplay (Ernest Tidyman) and editing (Gerald B. Greenberg). In addition to the Oscar® haul\, the film is famous for the most relentless and brain-jangling car chase in cinema history. Also featuring Eddie Egan and Sonny Grosso\, who were the real-life inspiration for the Hackman and Scheider characters\, as well as Tony Lo Bianco\, Luis Bunuel and Bill Hickman\, who also doubled as the film’s fearless stunt driver. \nPERFORMANCE ADVISORY\nAge Suitability: 18 and older

She attended Armenian Maryam Institute in Tehran. Miranda obtained her degree in International Hospitality Management from the Strathclyde University in Tehran. The love of painting has been present in her from a very young age. She has studied art with well known Iranian painters such as the late Alousha Minassian and Smbat Abrahamian. She has taken private lessons from the very respected professor Vahid Sheykhian of the Fine Arts faculty at Tehran University. The Armenian Painter’s Association in Yerevan officially invited her to Armenia\, where she had her first solo exhibition in 2014. She was awarded honorary membership by the association. This recognition has encouraged her to focus more passionately on her art.\n \nPresented by Roslin Art Gallery.
