As bluntly sung at the top of show…’Life is what you do while you’re waiting to die.’ Earthy\, practical and ultimately true. \nZORBA opened on Broadway in 1968 in a production starring Hershel Bernardi and directed by Harold Prince. It ran for 305 performances and was nominated for 8 Tony© Awards with Boris Aronson winning for his scenic design. It was revived on Broadway in 1983 starring Anthony Quinn.

SUMMARY:Leo Eguiarte & Melly Trochez: RITUAL/S
DESCRIPTION:Leo Eguiarte’s ongoing series delves into a world of symbolism and graphic imagery\, reflecting Eguiarte’s interests in signs and everyday ritual. While much of the work suggests esoterism and metaphysical states or landscapes\, Eguiarte’s approach is particularly subtle\, focusing on the unspoken customs that particular groups or individuals practice daily. As a kind of re-appropriation of what he sees as an already-appropriated point of view of some occultist groups and beliefs\, his imagery evolves out of any concrete attachment to belief or practice\, and enters into a meticulous and precise graphic world with simple vocabularies. His circuit panel series strives toward a kind of streamlined perfection: symmetrical lines\, patterned dots\, concentric circles\, prisms and a consistently limited color scheme of magenta\, pink and turquoise that allow for infinite variations on a theme. \nMelly Trochez’s work deals specifically with rituals: activities that are passed on culturally through generations that become embedded in notions of identity. Particularly interested in observing – and often commenting on – standards of beauty in Latina culture\, Trochez’s larger format acrylic paintings depict characters from her own life (sometimes even herself) participating in beautifying routines: ironing and bleaching hair\, applying sunblock\, mirror gazing – many rituals that become unconscious\, those that we forget why we even began doing them. Comments made when we were younger\, images seen during developing years\, advice and critique passed down through generations become an everyday practice. Trochez is pointing at these through her depictions that carry the cultural focus to an image. In doing so\, she highlights these rituals and brings them into question – a question that feels more like curiosity\, or a simple noticing\, rather than outward critique or commentary. \nOpening Reception: November 17\, 2018\, 7:00 – 10:00 pm \nGallery Hours: Tuesday\, 1:00 – 6:00 pm; Wednesday & Thursday\, 11:00 – 4:00 or by appointment \nace/121 Gallery is located at 121 N. DESCRIPTION:The Glendale Youth Orchestra (GYO) is celebrating 30 seasons as one of Los Angeles County’s leading youth orchestras. The GYO has played twice in recent years at the Walt Disney Concert Hall to great ovation. The 2011\, the GYO auditioned and was selected as a PREMIER LA Phil Youth Orchestra. Our Mission is based on the belief that our young people have a better chance of succeeding in their world if they appreciate and participate in its rich artistic and cultural traditions. GYO provides young musicians in grades 6-12 from all over L.A. County a unique opportunity to play classical music under the direction of Juilliard trained conductor Brad Keimach. The GYO has been a Resident Company of the Alex Theatre for 30 years. \nGLENDALE YOUTH ORCHESTRA\nBrad Keimach\, Conductor \nBEETHOVEN – Coriolan Overture\nSCHUBERT – Symphony No. 8 (‘Unfinished’)\nRAVEL – Tzigane\, for solo violin and orchestra\nRachel Mugemancuro\, violin\nMOZART – Symphony No. 35 (‘Haffner’) \nRachel Mugemancuro is a 9th grade student at Harvard-Westlake. She started playing the violin ten years ago and currently studies with Mihaela Ganea King. She has performed in multiple venues across the United States and was featured with Lang Lang on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno in October of 2012. She has been a member of the Glendale Youth Orchestra for six years. \nThere will be a Silent Auction to benefit the Scholarship Program. \nThe concert is funded in part by a grant from the Pasadena Showcase House for the Arts. \nThe GYO is supported\, in part\, by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors through the Los Angeles County Arts Commission.

A washed-up classical pianist\, Charlie Kohler / Edouard Saroyan (Charles Aznavour)\, bottoms out after his wife’s suicide — stroking the keys in a Parisian dive bar. DESCRIPTION:Artists For Kids presents LORIK\, an Armenian language film by Michael Poghosyan. \nThe film’s protagonist is actor Lorik\, Laurence Olivier’s namesake. \nWhen Lorik was a child\, he lost his parents\, who also were actors. Raised by his aunt\, Lorik realizes his childhood dream and becomes an actor\, but he lives in the imaginary world of his roles. He is now Cyrano de Bergerac\, then King Richard. However\, the main role he plays is not performed on the stage but in the conduct of his own life: the Rabbit from ‘Alice in Wonderland.’ Lorik does not perceive today’s realities and is afraid of being himself\, so he hides behind the masks of his characters. He is indifferent to the opinions of others and lives only through the feelings of his characters. \nSociety\, meanwhile\, worries about completely different issues. Social inequality\, the crisis of the confidence in authorities\, and a sense of hopelessness are increasing in the society. \nWhen the theatre is closed by an owner indifferent to the fate of its actors\, it seems to Lorik that\, with the absence of the theater and his roles\, his life is over. DESCRIPTION:Join Glendale Arts and the Alex Theatre at the table for a culinary journey with proceeds benefiting The Illuminate Fund which supports the City’s treasured icon\, the Alex Theatre’s Art Deco tower and marquee. \n$150 per person includes a celebration of inspirational food from a guest chef and specialty wines. \nYou are also invited to participate in the fine wine auction. In the spirit of charitable generosity\, we hope that every guest will donate a special bottle of wine for the silent auction taking place the night of the Illuminate Dinner. The Illuminate Fund was created by Glendale Arts in 2015 and raised $75\,000 to refurbish the spire and the marquee. Since 2015\, the Illuminate Fund has supported the ongoing maintenance and repair of the Alex Theatre’s iconic structure.

She is the author of Your Art Will Save Your Life (Feminist Press\, 2018). Her pamphlets—Making Art During Fascism and On Artists and Hopelessness—were designed and distributed by The Women’s Center for Creative Work in Los Angeles.\nPickens earned her Master’s degree in Counseling Psychology from the University of Missouri. Since 2010\, she’s provided career consultation\, grant writing\, fundraising\, and financial\, project\, and strategic planning services for artists and arts organizations throughout the U.S. She team-teaches an entrepreneurship course at the California Institute of the Arts School of Theater and teaches workshops at universities\, companies\, and art spaces throughout the U.S.\nBefore relocating to Los Angeles in 2014\, she was based in San Francisco where she served as Senior Program Manager at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts and Managing Director of two queer\, multidisciplinary arts non-profit organizations. She specializes in supporting queer and trans artists\, women\, and artists of color. She lives with her wife in LA. www.bethpickens.com \nJibz Cameron is a performance/video artist and actor living in Los Angeles. Her multi-media performance work as alter ego Dynasty Handbag has spanned 15 years and been presented at such institutions as MOCA\, PS1\, Joe’s Pub\, The Kitchen\, REDCAT\, The Broad Museum\, The Hammer Museum\, The New Museum of Contemporary Art New York\, among others. She has written and produced 7 evening length performance pieces and countless short works that have been performed in clubs and venues internationally. She also has produced multiple video works and 2 albums of original music. In addition to her work as Dynasty Handbag she has also been seen acting in films\, theater and television (internet web series no one has seen). She works as a professor of performance and comedy related subjects as well as lecturing and teaching workshops. Without telling each other\, both of them have plans to come back home with their respective lovers. The situation gets complicated when their neighbor is suddenly locked in their apartment. Cristina shows up with Pedro\, her lover\, and hours later Antonio returns with his lover Graciela.
