SUMMARY:Armenian Film Society presents ANDIN: Armenian Journey Chronicles
DESCRIPTION:Abril Bookstore’s AFS (Armenian Film Society) will present a documentary screening of\, ANDIN: Armenian Journey Chronicles followed by a discussion with director\, RUBEN GINEYon FRIDAY\, OCTOBER 5\, 2018 at 7:30pm at ABRIL BOOKSTORE – 415 E. Broadway\, Glendale\, CA. Admission is free for Armenian Film Society members. Please call (818) 243-4112 for details.\n\n\n\nANDIN is an exciting experience about traveling to the farthest corners of an Asian Сontinent trying to resolve a single question: how the Armenians were able to move along the Silk Road and link the east and west\, long before the discovery age? Within 3 years\, the crew filmed in 11 countries including Armenia\, France\, India\, China\, Tibet\, Central Asia\, Russia\, and Santo Domingo. They searched for legendary artifacts such as the sunken ship of the famous pirate\, William Kidd\, or a mysterious Armenian monastery at the bottom of Lake Issyk Kul near the Chinese border where remains of one of Christ’s disciples are kept.\n\n\n\n  \nRUBEN GINEY is an Armenian-born film Director. In 2002 Ruben entered the State Institute of Cinematography in Moscow (VGIK). In 2005 he moved to China\, where he joined an International Advertising Company “Kuiyou” Production House as creative director. During this period Ruben directed more than 25 commercials for international corporations such as Panasonic\, Asahi\, McDonalds\, Shiseido\, Honda\, Toshiba etc. He is the author of several documentaries for International TV channels. In 2007-2009 he erved as Military Cameraman at the Ministry of Defence of Armenia.\n\n \n\n\n\nPresented by the Armenian Film Society and Abril Bookstore.

SUMMARY:Musical Theatre Guild presents ZORBA
DESCRIPTION:Musical Theatre Guild presents a staged concert version of\nZORBA \nMusic: John Kander\nLyrics: Fred Ebb\nBook: Joseph Stein\nBased on Nikos Kazantzakis’s novel and the subsequent film Zorba the Greek \nProlific and ever versatile composers Kander and Ebb travel us to Greece with one of their most beautifully evocative scores. Based on the 1952 novel and 1964 classic film\, we meet the exuberant and passionate Zorba as he befriends a fledgling American writer who confronts his own life choices when he falls in love with a local widow. As bluntly sung at the top of show…’Life is what you do while you’re waiting to die.’ Earthy\, practical and ultimately true. \nZORBA opened on Broadway in 1968 in a production starring Hershel Bernardi and directed by Harold Prince. It ran for 305 performances and was nominated for 8 Tony© Awards with Boris Aronson winning for his scenic design. It was revived on Broadway in 1983 starring Anthony Quinn.

SUMMARY:Leo Eguiarte & Melly Trochez: RITUAL/S
DESCRIPTION:Leo Eguiarte’s ongoing series delves into a world of symbolism and graphic imagery\, reflecting Eguiarte’s interests in signs and everyday ritual. While much of the work suggests esoterism and metaphysical states or landscapes\, Eguiarte’s approach is particularly subtle\, focusing on the unspoken customs that particular groups or individuals practice daily. As a kind of re-appropriation of what he sees as an already-appropriated point of view of some occultist groups and beliefs\, his imagery evolves out of any concrete attachment to belief or practice\, and enters into a meticulous and precise graphic world with simple vocabularies. His circuit panel series strives toward a kind of streamlined perfection: symmetrical lines\, patterned dots\, concentric circles\, prisms and a consistently limited color scheme of magenta\, pink and turquoise that allow for infinite variations on a theme. \nMelly Trochez’s work deals specifically with rituals: activities that are passed on culturally through generations that become embedded in notions of identity. Particularly interested in observing – and often commenting on – standards of beauty in Latina culture\, Trochez’s larger format acrylic paintings depict characters from her own life (sometimes even herself) participating in beautifying routines: ironing and bleaching hair\, applying sunblock\, mirror gazing – many rituals that become unconscious\, those that we forget why we even began doing them. Comments made when we were younger\, images seen during developing years\, advice and critique passed down through generations become an everyday practice. Trochez is pointing at these through her depictions that carry the cultural focus to an image. In doing so\, she highlights these rituals and brings them into question – a question that feels more like curiosity\, or a simple noticing\, rather than outward critique or commentary. \nOpening Reception: November 17\, 2018\, 7:00 – 10:00 pm \nGallery Hours: Tuesday\, 1:00 – 6:00 pm; Wednesday & Thursday\, 11:00 – 4:00 or by appointment \nace/121 Gallery is located at 121 N.
