SUMMARY:Antaeus Theatre Company Summer Class: Voice\, Presence & Classical Text
DESCRIPTION:Moderated by Scott Ferrara\nThursday\, 1-5pm (7/25-9/12)\nClass Fee: $400 (Early Bird Discount $350 if paid in full by 7/11)\nClass Size: 12-14\n\n\n\nTheater\, film\, and television all call for vocal strength\, flexibility\, and specificity. This class uses a holistic approach to voice work\, to help students explore the dynamics between body\, breath\, voice\, imagination\, language\, and presence. This approach liberates the mind\, body\, and voice by strengthening the connection between what a person feels and what they express. By integrating physical exercises with mental focus\, students will bring the full richness of their experiences to their work. Students will add more variety to the expression of their voices\, in terms of pitch\, volume\, and singing by strengthening the “support” for their voices. Students will work on Classical Text with their voice work\, further developing the awareness\, trust and freedom with breathing\, body\, feelings\, imagination\, and voice. \n  \n\n\nCourse Instructor\n \nScott Ferrara\nAt Antaeus: Les Liaisons Dangereuses. SUMMARY:Antaeus Theatre Company Summer Class: It’s Alive! The Nuts And Bolts Of Acting In New Plays
DESCRIPTION:Moderated by Emily Chase\nMonday\, 11am-3pm\, (7/22-9/9)\nClass Fee: $400 (Early Bird Discount $350 if paid in full by 7/8)\nClass Size: 14-16\n\n\n\nAcross America\, important new plays are coming out of development workshops. Working actors need to know how to make an unforgettable impression in staged readings and rehearsals of “plays-in-process”\, but these skills aren’t generally taught in conservatories. In this class\, students will work with the Lab Director of the Antaeus Playwrights Lab on compelling scripts by some of today’s hottest playwrights. Featured guests will include prominent directors and writers whose works are being produced on Los Angeles stages. Students will learn how to audition for new plays\, analyze text both quickly and deeply\, make bold\, visceral acting choices\, and slay in staged readings. We will also discuss the nuts and bolts business of acting in the L.A. theater world. If there are writers in the class\, there may be a Lab-style session to read their work! For the class culmination\, students will rehearse and perform a public staged reading of a new play at Antaeus\, working closely with the playwright. (Please note that the final session of the class will be the public performance on Monday\, July 15\, at 7pm.) \n\n\nCourse Instructor\n \nEmily Chase\nEmily Chase is a longtime company member\, and facilitates the Antaeus Playwrights Lab.  Director: Divorce Court Hell and several original one-act plays (Antaeus)\, A Little House Christmas (Sierra Madre Playhouse)\, Round and Round the Garden and Real Inspector Hound (Theater 40); And Know That I am God (Road Theatre) and projects at  Moving Arts\, Met Theater\, Classical Theater Lab\, Strasberg\, Road Theater\, Playwrights Union\, etc.  Actress: South Coast Rep\, Taper Too\, Antaeus Company\, El Portal\, Getty Center\, John Anson Ford Theater; also web series\, TV\, and film. SUMMARY:Antaeus Theatre Company Summer Class: Back In-Yer-Face Again: The Theatre Of Discomfort

How comfortable have people become watching things that are uncomfortable? Has everyone been so desensitized by sexuality\, violence\, and disturbing subject matter that nobody knows how to be offended by it anymore? In the first half of the 20th century\, Antonin Artaud advocated a “theatre of cruelty\,” attempting to throw audiences into the center of the action and force them to respond to the art on a visceral level. Through scene study\, students in this class will explore the kind of material that shocks the audience\, unsettles them\, jars them. In this class\, students will investigate the visceral. \n*First class meets Wednesday\, June 12. SUMMARY:Musical Theatre Guild presents SUNDAY IN THE PARK WITH GEORGE
DESCRIPTION:Musical Theatre Guild presents a staged concert version of\nSUNDAY IN THE PARK WITH GEORGE\n \nMusic & Lyrics: Stephen Sondheim\nBook: James Lapine \nWinner of the 1985 Pulitzer Prize for drama\, SUNDAY IN THE PARK WITH GEORGE is an enchanting show with a complex\, beautiful\, haunting score reflecting Georges Seurat’s imagined journey as he creates his most famous painting: A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte. Then in classic Sondheim/James Lapine style it presents a second act centered around a modern-day descendant\, also a George\, an artist blocked and wrestling with the pursuit of his creative spark in today’s commercial world. \nAct I premiered Off-Broadway in 1983 starring Bernadette Peters & Mandy Patinkin and on Broadway with both acts in 1984. It also won the Drama Desk & NY Drama Critic’s Circle Awards\, was nominated for 11 Tony© Awards\, & won for scenic & lighting design. Revived on Broadway in 2008 & 2017.

SUMMARY:Musical Theatre Guild presents MINNIE'S BOYS
DESCRIPTION:Musical Theatre Guild presents a staged concert version of\nMINNIE’S BOYS\n \nMusic: Larry Grossman\nLyrics: Hal Hackady\nBook: Arthur Marx and Robert Fisher \nBefore Mama Rose there was Minnie\, a super-Mom who was the driving force behind the famous Marx Brothers. A vaudeville performer herself\, Minnie coaxed\, pushed\, pulled\, and prodded the boys into their now-famous entity. Seldom seen but dearly loved\, this Larry Grossman/Hal Hackady tuneful and infectious score takes us through the zany early years of the brothers as they get their start in burlesque. You know their films\, but we bet you don’t know how it all started. \nAfter an unusually long preview period of 64 performances\, MINNIE’S BOYS opened in 1970 at Broadway’s Imperial Theatre. The musical\, which played a total of 80 regular performances\, was directed by Stanley Prager and starred Shelley Winters and Lewis J. Stadlen. The score includes the standout ‘Mama A Rainbow.’

SUMMARY:Marco Millions
DESCRIPTION:The story of Marco Polo\, dynamic young explorer of the Far East\, as told by one of America’s leading playwrights\, Eugene O’Neill. Once described in a 1928 review “…a coruscating satire\, biting in its irony\, suffused with poetry\, rich and dramatic in its simple story\, and resplendently colorful in its background\, atmosphere and imagery…” O’Neill clearly takes aim at the politics of his time\, and ends up with a beautiful and poignant allegory for ALL time. Young Marco is a man eager for success – some might even say “destined” for it. But how that success is achieved\, and what it might ultimately cost\, becomes the focus of this rarely performed masterpiece.
