SUMMARY:Sayat Nova's ETERNAL ROSE
DESCRIPTION:SAYAT NOVA’S ETERNAL ROSE will be a musical evening with the Kerovpyan Trio from the Kotchnak Ensemble featuring vocalist Virginia Pattie Kerovpyan\, kanounist Aram Kerovpyan and percussionist Vahan Kerovpyan. The ensemble formed in 1980 in Paris and specializes in Armenian folk and troubadour music. Each performance is a unique experience in that they follow the tradition of perpetual recreation by means of improvisation. Sayat Nova (1722-1795) was a musician and poet at the Georgian court who later became a priest. He was one of the rare ashough-troubadours whose poems have reached us. Of the numerous poems copied in his notebook\, only 27 have melodies today\, having survived through the oral tradition. \nVIRGINIA PATTIE KEROVPYAN was born in Washington\, D.C. and moved to Paris in the 1970’s. She has performed and recorded with various early music\, as well as contemporary music\, ensembles. Soloist of the Kotchnak and Akn ensembles\, she has specialized in Armenian song since 1980. Her interpretation brings to the forefront the essence of this music\, making its discovery and transmission more accessible. \nARAM KEROVPYAN was born in Istanbul\, Turkey. He learned to play the kanoun and studied the Near Easternmusic system with Master musician Saadeddin Öktenay. Moving to Paris\, he joined the Kotchnak ensemble\, performing Armenian folk and troubadour music\, and in 1985 established the Akn ensemble specializing in Armenian liturgical chant. He has been the master-singer of the Armenian cathedral in Paris since 1990. He is active in the world of theater as musician\, teacher\, and composer. He holds a Ph.D. in musicology and publishes about modal theory and the history of Armenian liturgical music. \nFor more information\, call (818) 243-4112.

Proceeds from this event fund TMP’s school- based initiative The PLAY-offs. This free after-school program provides high school musicians the creative space and resources to form groups that prepare for The Music Path PLAY-off inter- school tournament (Battle of the Bands) for contemporary music. Students form their own groups\, choose their own material\, write original songs\, and manage their own rehearsals! Her quietly passionate interpretations of lullabies from historical villages across the Armenian plateau offer a mesmerizing glimpse at a lost world. She draws strength and inspiration from her ancestors in the province of Mush in Historic Armenia\, especially her grandmother\, Mafo\, who sang to her as a child. In addition to songs sung by her family\, Hasmik learned many of the folk songs in her repertoire from old women who had emigrated from the Armenian Highlands to eastern Armenia before or during the Armenian massacres and genocide of 1915\, as well as from their descendants and old song collections.\n\n \nThis event celebrates the release of Ororner (Lullabies)\, Harutyunyan’s new book and CD anthology of 57 lullabies\, and Lorik\, with children’s songs composed by Komitas Vardapet\, and folk songs from Historic Armenia. The event is dedicated to the 150th anniversary of Komitas Vardapet\, who saved Armenian songs and melodies and passed them onto us.

A strong proponent of bringing music to underserved youth in Los Angeles\, he is the music director and conductor of the nationally-acclaimed Harmony Project Orchestras\, Hollywood\, the Valley Philharmonic Orchestra in Porter Ranch\, and with the Kadima Conservatory Philharmonic in Pacoima. For 7 years\, Mr. Shin also served as the assistant conductor of the Elizabeth Mandell Music Institute (EMMI) Chamber Orchestra at the prestigious Crossroads School for Arts and Sciences in Santa Monica. \nMr. Shin holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from UC Berkeley\, his Master’s degree in conducting from the USC Flora L. This beloved tradition will take place on Sunday\, December 8\, 2019\, at 3:00 PM\, in the beautiful Hall of Liberty on the grounds of Forest Lawn Hollywood Hills\, 6300 Forest Lawn Dr.\, Los Angeles\, CA 90068. Over 100 tuba and baritone players ranging in age from 8 to 80 come from all over Southern California to play Christmas carols—and a few Hanukah songs—to the delight of everyone in attendance. \nThe concert is free to the public\, and the audience is encouraged to sing along. \nFeatured guest artists will include Jim Self\, master tubist who provided the voice of the mothership in Close Encounters of the Third Kind; The Hollywood Tuba 12\, a 12-piece ensemble of some of the best professional players in the world; the Tubadours pro quartet; and the USC Tuba Quartet. \nMarking his ninth year as conductor is Scott Wilkinson\, a second generation native Angelino\, professional tubist\, and long-time Tuba Christmas participant.
