SUMMARY:Artists For Kids Presents MOUNTAINS\, THE SUN & LOVE FILM BY MICHAEL POGHOSYAN
DESCRIPTION:Artists For Kids presents MOUNTAINS\, THE SUN & LOVE\, an Armenian language film by Michael Poghosyan. \nIn Moscow photojournalist Anastacia\, assigned to make a photo report about Armenian Artists Union’s exhibition\, stumbles on a portrait with her face. Dated 1991\, it had an unfamiliar signature – Zatik. She realizes it’s a portrait of her late mother. Anastacia finds evidence in the house that leads her to conclude that the painter is her father\, about whom her mother had avoided speaking. \nShe arrives in the village of Yenoqavan in Armenia to find him and take revenge. Zatik is famous in the village for his crazy lifestyle\, eccentric behavior and love for alcohol. Despite this he is accepted and loved for being an enthusiastic person and talented painter. Anastacia hates her father’s ludicrous activities and fabricates different situations to make Zatik’s life harder. She photographs everything that reveals this unconventional painter’s true face. At last she confronts Zatik with the pictures she has taken and lashes out at him\, fueled by all the pain and hate that she has held inside through the years. \nThen Anastacia finds out Zatik is not her father; he was in love with her mother\, but it was never mutual. Later she finds her real father\, only to realize he doesn’t love her. This causes her to re-evaluate what she learned in Armenia and her feelings about Zatik\, ultimately realizing he has become family to her and that she will never let him go out of her life. \nPERFORMANCE ADVISORIES\nPerformance Language: Armenian with English subtitles\nLate Seating: Latecomers will be seated at the discretion of the event’s Presenter

SUMMARY:Alex Film Society Presents HALLOWEEN CLASSICS! THE OLD DARK HOUSE (1932) & THE RAVEN (1935)
DESCRIPTION:Universal Studios was the undisputed master of horror and the macabre during the 1930s and 40s. The Alex Film Society celebrates the Halloween season with a pair of films featuring two of the studio’s most popular stars. \nThe Raven (1935) teams Boris Karloff with his frequent on-screen nemesis\, Bela Lugosi. The picture highlights Edgar Allan Poe’s famous poem and features Lugosi as a Poe-obsessed mad surgeon who just happens to have a torture chamber in his basement. Karloff is a fugitive murderer on the lam who falls victim to Lugosi’s mad schemes. Both actors were at the height of their fame\, making this fast-paced thriller one of Universal’s best offerings. Universal is providing an excellent 35mm print for the occasion. \nThe Old Dark House (1932) was assumed to be a lost classic until a film negative was discovered in the Universal vaults in 1968. It has since assumed cult-like status among fans of director James Whale\, who helmed Frankenstein (1931) and Bride of Frankenstein (1935). Whale packed his offbeat take on horror with star talent including\, Melvyn Douglas\, Charles Laughton\, Raymond Massey\, Gloria Stuart and\, of course\, Karloff. AFS will be screening a glorious new 4K digital restoration. \n  \nLive on Stage: Illeana Douglas\, Sara Karloff and Bela Lugosi\, Jr. \nActress\, director\, author\, screenwriter\, and producer Illeana Douglas will be our host for the evening. She has written and produced numerous segments for Turner Classic Movies (TCM)\, and has participated in the annual TCM Classic Fim Festival in Hollywood. She brings a unique perspective to the AFS Halloween screening of The Old Dark House: She is the granddaughter of Melvyn Douglas\, one of the stars of that film and a Hollywood legend\, whose fifty-year career included staring roles in Ninotchka (1939)\, Hud (1963) and Being There (1979). \nMs. Douglas also hosts The Film Scene podcast\, which will be streaming live from the Alex for this event\, and will be signing copies of her best-selling book\, I Blame Dennis Hopper: And Other Stories from a Life Lived In and Out of the Movies. She’ll be joined onstage by Bela Lugosi\, Jr. and Sara Karloff for a discussion regarding “life with father.” \n

SUMMARY:11 Steps Ahead: Future Forward Armenian American Visionaries
DESCRIPTION:While the original Futurists in Italy applied their aesthetics and social practices of technology and the industrial city to diverse artistic mediums in order to emphasize a movement of youth and the “new\,” futurism as a term has since been tied to other movements using diverse genres in order to advance thought and artistic output. Notably\, Afrofuturism has long explored how aspects of the African diaspora relate to technology by employing philosophy\, science fiction among other forms to narrate a history and future that reflects an alternative imagining of culture.\nThe fate of Armenia and its own diaspora following the 1915 genocide saw a rapid dispersal of Armenians around the world\, creating an integration of global influences and experiences in the Armenian people. Generations later\, children of survivors of the genocide\, born in diverse parts of the world and with wide-ranging cultural and artistic influences\, have continued to alter their own histories – and futures – by inserting themselves into progressive artistic and scientific movements\, no matter where they established new life.\nThe artists gathered here represent a shared inspiration from a constant exchange of diverse ideologies and cultures in the diaspora\, each having created a unique sensitivity toward a certain future in their works. Their respective mediums – visual storytelling and graphic novels\, production architecture\, visual art\, design\, and music (cello) – tell a story of integrating history into a present image of reality in order to serve our collective future. These stories are fabricated both in the visual depictions of their imagery and music as well as the use of traditional materials and media of our present day.

SUMMARY:Alex Film Society Presents THE FRENCH CONNECTION (1971) STARRING GENE HACKMAN
DESCRIPTION:Arguably the greatest American crime film ever made\, THE FRENCH CONNECTION stars Gene Hackman and Roy Scheider as two NYPD detectives doggedly pursuing the ringleader of a global heroin smuggling syndicate (Fernando Rey). Based on real characters and loosely mimicking real events\, the film rebuffs political correctness to portray a grungy\, streetwise view of the mean streets of 1970s New York. Distinguished as the first R-rated film to win the Oscar® for Best Picture\, it also took home trophies for director (William Friedkin)\, best actor (Hackman)\, adapted screenplay (Ernest Tidyman) and editing (Gerald B. Greenberg). In addition to the Oscar® haul\, the film is famous for the most relentless and brain-jangling car chase in cinema history. Also featuring Eddie Egan and Sonny Grosso\, who were the real-life inspiration for the Hackman and Scheider characters\, as well as Tony Lo Bianco\, Luis Bunuel and Bill Hickman\, who also doubled as the film’s fearless stunt driver. \nPERFORMANCE ADVISORY\nAge Suitability: 18 and older

SUMMARY:Artists For Kids Presents LORIK FILM BY MICHAEL POGHOSYAN
DESCRIPTION:Artists For Kids presents LORIK\, an Armenian language film by Michael Poghosyan. \nThe film’s protagonist is actor Lorik\, Laurence Olivier’s namesake. \nWhen Lorik was a child\, he lost his parents\, who also were actors. Raised by his aunt\, Lorik realizes his childhood dream and becomes an actor\, but he lives in the imaginary world of his roles. He is now Cyrano de Bergerac\, then King Richard. However\, the main role he plays is not performed on the stage but in the conduct of his own life: the Rabbit from ‘Alice in Wonderland.’ Lorik does not perceive today’s realities and is afraid of being himself\, so he hides behind the masks of his characters. He is indifferent to the opinions of others and lives only through the feelings of his characters. \nSociety\, meanwhile\, worries about completely different issues. Social inequality\, the crisis of the confidence in authorities\, and a sense of hopelessness are increasing in the society. \nWhen the theatre is closed by an owner indifferent to the fate of its actors\, it seems to Lorik that\, with the absence of the theater and his roles\, his life is over. But actually his real life is just beginning. After the shock\, something strange happens to Lorik. Is this a dream or a delusion? Lorik begins to be transformed externally into other people and has to live episodes from their lives\, all the while remaining the same Lorik internally. Those life episodes are not easy; they are real tests. Through them Lorik learns to understand and feel the happiness and pain of others as his own and to experience love. Thus the rebirth of his soul begins. \nPERFORMANCE ADVISORIES\nPerformance Language: Armenian with English Subtitles\nLate Seating: At discretion of the event’s Presenter

Please call (818) 243-4112 for details.\n\nECHOES OF SURVIVAL is an experimental documentary series about the ambiguity of what it means to be an Armenian living in America today. In April 2015\, during the 100th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide\, the author found himself drawn to the idea of how certain artists around the United States view themselves as Armenian\, and how their identities shape their work. This project is an attempt to better understand who we are today\, and how the culture has survived through these artists and their work.\n\n\n\nAVO JOHN KAMBOURIAN was born and raised in Los Angeles. He picked up a camera at age 10 and cast his friends in comedic short films about Batman. Later he picked up editing while still in high school. In 2010\, he traveled to Armenia\, where he had an internship at Bars Media Studio\, a documentary company. Upon returning to the US he earned his BA in Communication at UC San Diego. In subsequent years he returned to Armenia in between jobs as a PA\, Assistant Editor\, to work on his own documentaries about the region. Avo John works in post-production as an editor\, having worked for companies such as Vice\, Nat Geo\, Hit RECord\, and BMG Films.\n  \n\n\nPresented by the Armenian Film Society and Abril Bookstore.
