SUMMARY:Los Angeles Ballet Presents THE SLEEPING BEAUTY
DESCRIPTION:The Sleeping Beauty is one of the greatest and most treasured story ballets of all time. Inspired by Charles Perrault’s story ‘La belle au bois dormant’ or ‘The beauty sleeping in the wood\,’ Marius Petipa created this wonderful production\, considered to be the most authentic of his work and the epitome of classical ballet. This cherished story\, however\, represents much more than just a fairytale. It is about our potential inner beauty that lies dormant\, poisoned by the powers of evil\, forced into hiding and left to wait to be awakened by the power of love. \nPERFORMANCE ADVISORY\nLate Seating: Latecomers will be seated at the discretion of the event’s Presenter

SUMMARY:What She Said Living in Dystopia Presented by ace/121 Gallery & The Association of Hysteric Curators
DESCRIPTION:January 17 – March 13\, 2020\nOpening Reception: January 17th 6-9 pm \nCommunity Day: February 29th 2-5 pm \nPaula Wilson Salty and Fresh\nThroughout time and across all cultures women have held the role of prophet\, oracle\, seer\, and diviner. Their stories warned us where our society was heading. In exchange for their wisdom they have been banned and burned\, but also revered and channeled. She never stopped speaking and we never stopped listening.  Sometimes it is a whisper and sometimes it is a shout. \nThe Exhibition “What She Said” includes 2D\, 3D\, and performance art\, as well as free public programming. The show places focus on feminist strategies that address our current dystopian reality. “What She Said\,” starts with the premise that extreme circumstances create fertile ground for visionary speculation. Many of the artists in the show address direct relationships between the vessel of the body as a channel for divinity\, trauma\, transmutation\, birth and death. The artwork in the show addresses the way an oracular vision speaks to society today in a digital culture\, integrating gazes\, voices\, and experiences. \n“What She Said” features work by Lili Bernard\, Annie Buckley\, Cherie Benner Davis\,Carolyn ño\, Nancy Evans\, Scarlett Kim and Maya Mackrandilal\, Marne Lucas aka CuntemporaryArtist\, Silvi Naçi\, Mary Anna Pomonis\, Cintia Segovia\, Allison Stewart\, Emily Sudd\, Camilla Taylor\, Paula Wilson\, Jessica Wimbley\, Michiko Yao\, Caroline Yoo\, and Dajin Yoon \nPerformances \nOpening Reception Friday January 17th\, 6-9 Scarlett Kim and Maya Mackrandilal\nCommunity Day of Saturday\, February 29th 2-5pm. Annie Buckley\nMichiko Yao\nCintia Segovia\nDajin Yoon\nMary Anna Pomonis \nThe Association of Hysteric Curators (AHC) envelops a fluid\, evolving\, trans-generational group of feminists who seek to explore notions of female protest and the presence of gendered articulations through a non-hierarchical structure based in dialogue and exchange. As we honor the lineage of feminist models\, we dare to envision a future of human equality\, knowing we must interrogate the customs of today in order to enable conditions for change. As an agent of chaos and change\, we posit our curatorial agenda as a figurative fault line; our research a body of water formed in a valley between two plates; our legacy the large-scale lateral movement along hundreds of miles of the fault: watch us as we spread and break down barriers\, expanding and amplifying our space in society. \nace/121 Gallery\nGallery Hours\nTuesday 9:30 – 2:30\nWednesday/Thursday 12:00 – 5:00\nOr by appointment.\n121 N. SUMMARY:Musical Theatre Guild presents SUNDAY IN THE PARK WITH GEORGE
DESCRIPTION:Musical Theatre Guild presents a staged concert version of\nSUNDAY IN THE PARK WITH GEORGE\n \nMusic & Lyrics: Stephen Sondheim\nBook: James Lapine \nWinner of the 1985 Pulitzer Prize for drama\, SUNDAY IN THE PARK WITH GEORGE is an enchanting show with a complex\, beautiful\, haunting score reflecting Georges Seurat’s imagined journey as he creates his most famous painting: A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte. Then in classic Sondheim/James Lapine style it presents a second act centered around a modern-day descendant\, also a George\, an artist blocked and wrestling with the pursuit of his creative spark in today’s commercial world. \nAct I premiered Off-Broadway in 1983 starring Bernadette Peters & Mandy Patinkin and on Broadway with both acts in 1984. It also won the Drama Desk & NY Drama Critic’s Circle Awards\, was nominated for 11 Tony© Awards\, & won for scenic & lighting design. Revived on Broadway in 2008 & 2017.

Together they share a common passion for dance and performance\, this connection resulted in the creation of Versa-Style in 2005. These forms include Hip-Hop styles such as 90s Hip-Hop\, House\, Popping\, Locking\, Whacking and Boogaloo\, and Afro- Latin styles such as Salsa\, Merengue\, Cumbia and Afro-Cuban to name a few. As a reaction to the widespread media misrepresentation of these dance forms\, Versa-Style specifically aims to perform for the youth of Los Angeles to instill the roots\, history\, and social and political issues surrounding the art of our generation.Hip-Hop breaks color lines by creating a forum where people come together for a common passion rather than grouping themselves by race or socio-economic backgrounds. Versa-Style demonstrates freedom of expression\, freedom of individuality\, hard work\, self-discipline and dedication to the form. \nThe performances are free and open to the public. Seating is limited. An accessible entrance and parking is located on the East side of the building. For more information contact\, 818-548-2051. \nBrand Library & Art Center is located in northwest Glendale\, easily accessed via the Golden State (5) or Ventura (134) freeways. SUMMARY:Los Angeles Ballet presents SERENADE & LA SYLPHIDE
DESCRIPTION:This passionate program offers two masterpieces choreographed by the two “Mr. B’s”. August Bournonville’s La Sylphide\, in 2 acts\, is a captivating story of love and loss. George Balanchine’s Serenade\, stirring\, sweeping and romantic\, is one of Balanchine’s best-loved works. \nSERENADE\nSerenade is a milestone in the history of dance. It is the first original ballet Balanchine created in America. Originating it as a lesson in stage technique\, Balanchine worked unexpected rehearsal events into the choreography. When one student fell\, he incorporated it. Another day\, a student arrived late\, and this too became part of the ballet. \nChoreography by George Balanchine\nMusic by Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky \nLA SYLPHIDE\nLa Sylphide marked the beginning of the Romantic era in ballet. This charming and fantastical ballet revolves around James\, a young Scotsman who fatefully meets and falls in love with Sylph on the day he is to wed his betrothed. He is befriended and then betrayed by a witch\, and in the end James loses both his betrothed and his Sylph. La Sylphide ‘s poignant beauty is reflected in how simply the story is told. \nChoreography by Herman Severin Løvenskiold\nMusic by Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky

SUMMARY:Musical Theatre Guild presents MINNIE'S BOYS
DESCRIPTION:Musical Theatre Guild presents a staged concert version of\nMINNIE’S BOYS\n \nMusic: Larry Grossman\nLyrics: Hal Hackady\nBook: Arthur Marx and Robert Fisher \nBefore Mama Rose there was Minnie\, a super-Mom who was the driving force behind the famous Marx Brothers. A vaudeville performer herself\, Minnie coaxed\, pushed\, pulled\, and prodded the boys into their now-famous entity. Seldom seen but dearly loved\, this Larry Grossman/Hal Hackady tuneful and infectious score takes us through the zany early years of the brothers as they get their start in burlesque. You know their films\, but we bet you don’t know how it all started. \nAfter an unusually long preview period of 64 performances\, MINNIE’S BOYS opened in 1970 at Broadway’s Imperial Theatre. The musical\, which played a total of 80 regular performances\, was directed by Stanley Prager and starred Shelley Winters and Lewis J. Stadlen. The score includes the standout ‘Mama A Rainbow.’

SUMMARY:Los Angeles Ballet Academy Presents A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM
DESCRIPTION:Kick off your summer entertainment with a magical ballet based on Shakespeare’s popular comedy A Midsummer Night’s Dream. \nYou can enjoy romance in all its guises to the evocative music of Mendelssohn with the talented dancers of Los Angeles Ballet Academy. The mischievous fairy Puck plays a pivotal role in the comic adventures and misadventures\, quarrels and re-unitings of two pairs of mortal lovers\, and the king and queen of the fairies\, Oberon and Titania. And don’t miss the hilarious scene when rustic Bottom\, turned into a Donkey\, becomes the object of the Fairy Queen’s affection – a perfect illustration of the adage ‘love is blind’! \nBut all’s well that ends well\, with our lovers reconciled in a wedding celebration set to Mendelssohn’s beautiful ‘Wedding March’ that concludes the performance. \nPraised for productions that are ‘magical’ (Culture Spot )\, ‘mesmerizing’ (LA Beat )\, and ‘a work of art\,’ ‘very professional\,’ and ‘choreographed to perfection’ (Meet Up )\, LA Ballet Academy’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream is a dance event not to be missed.
