SUMMARY:Roslin Art Gallery presents Haroutune Armenian
DESCRIPTION: On occasion of Haroutune Armenian‘s recently published book capturing through poetry and art his experiences on the Camino de Santiago de Compostela pilgrimage trail in Spain\, Roslin Art Gallery will hold a special exhibit of the original artwork from the book titled\, FROM THE CAMINO & US: Watercolors and More which opens on Friday\, October 18\, 2019 with a reception starting at 7:00pm and will remain on exhibit until October 31 at 415 E. Broadway\, Glendale\, CA. Gallery hours are from 10:00am – 7:00pm\, Monday through Saturday. There will also be a book release event in Armenian of his new book on Thursday\, October 24\, introduced by Hagop Gulludjian. Admission is free. For more information\, call (818) 241-0611. \n\n\n\n \n\nFROM THE CAMINO & US is an exhibit of watercolor paintings and other work by artist Haroutune Armenian on occasion of the release of his new book of watercolors and poetry in Armenian\, The Camino and Us: by the footpath of the messenger which captures the 700 km trail Haroutune and his wife Sona hiked leading to Santiago de Compostela and the months following. On exhibit are all of the pieces contained in the book as well as some of Haroutune’s larger pieces and collage works. Armenian’s scenes are at once idyllic\, spontaneous and endlessly experimental and his controlled hand and novel use of color retain a refreshing simplicity and sincerity. \n“Armenian embraces luxe\, calme et volupté no less intensely than Henri Matisse in his inter-war years. Similarly\, his light touch and aqueous palette conjure the work of Raoul Dufy.” – Critic Peter Frank\n\nHAROUT ARMENIAN is a visual artist interested in the transformative potential of watercolor. His work includes landscapes and seascapes captured during travels to over 40 countries as well as a collection of abstract work. Born in Beirut\, Lebanon\, Armenian began painting in 1976\, during a time when the country was embroiled in a fierce civil war. Faced daily with the sound of bombs and an eyewitness to violent unrest\, Armenian sought respite through painting. While working at the American University of Beirut\, he frequently painted the campus’ vibrant gardens and views overlooking the Mediterranean Sea\, a prologue to his disciplined self-study of watercolor painting that would continue for decades to come.\n\n \n\n\n\nPresented by Roslin Art Gallery.\n\n### \nCONTACT: Arno Yeretzian at Roslin Art Gallery (818) 241-0611.

SUMMARY:Abril Bookstore & Tekeyan Cultural Association proudly present ARPI SARAFIAN's ENDLESS CROSSINGS
DESCRIPTION:In a wide-ranging and diverse mix of essays published over a span of over thirty years Sarafian explores the complexities of the immigrant experience.  In a new definition of reality\, she contends\, survival requires the negotiation of several worlds. “Ethnic” is past its definition of the clash of two cultures. Indeed\, deconstructing the ethnic/mainstream polarity\, that is removing Armenianness\, and by extension any other ethnicity\, from opposition to the “System” may well be the only hope for survival\, if at all possible\, for Armenians in the Diaspora. Sarafian would like to see the hyphen dropped from Armenian-American (as well as from ChineseAmerican\, Mexican-American or from any other hyphenated American) as it creates a hierarchy which inevitably leads to the valuing of the socalled “majority” culture and the belittling of the “other\,” the “lesser” culture. A rich and vibrant culture like ours is capable of continual renewal and cannot but find its way into the mainstream. Thus\, rather than deplore the gradual loss of our ethnic identity\, we could help make “ethnic” a relative term with no stigma attached to it. \nThe book covers a range of subjects such as literary figures including Leon Zaven Surmelian\, Peter Najarian\, Micheline Aharonian Marcom\, Aris Janigian\, Garin Hovannisian\, Tina Demirjian\, David Kherdian\, artists Kardash Onnig\, Seeroon Yeretzian\, musicians Arpine and George Pehlivanian\, and various theatrical performances\, art exhibits\, and conferences.\n  \n\nARPI SARAFIAN holds a Ph.D. from the University of Southern California and a B.A. and M.A. from the American University of Beirut. She was a lecturer in English Language and Literature at the California State University\, Los Angeles from 1978 to retirement in 2014. Sarafian has also taught at the California State University\, Dominguez Hills and at Loyola Marymount University. She has published articles in The Armenian Observer\, ararat Literary Quarterly\, The Armenian Mirror-Spectator\, Armenian International Magazine (AIM)\, Virginia Woolf Miscellany\, Publication of the Modern Language Association (PMLA)\, Journal of the Society of Armenian Studies (JSAS) and the Los Angeles Times.\n\n\n\nTUESDAY\, SEPTEMBER 17\, 2019– 7:30PM\nABRIL BOOKSTORE\n415 E. The nation’s biggest farmers–the nut king\, grape king and citrus queen–tell their story here for the first time.\n\n\nMARK ARAX is an author and journalist whose writings on California and the West have received numerous awards for literary nonfiction. SUMMARY:Abril Bookstore Presents Wendy Elliott GRIT AND GRACE IN A WORLD GONE MAD
DESCRIPTION:GRIT AND GRACE IN A WORLD GONE MAD tells the remarkable yet little known story of a small group of American and Canadian missionaries and relief workers in Talas who saved thousands of Armenian\, Greek and Turkish orphans from starvation\, disease and harm during the dying days of the Ottoman Empire. They were part of a massive humanitarian aid effort\, which was said of at the time\, “If the expedition succeeds to the full measure of its program\, it will be a modern miracle; if it accomplishes a half of what it is undertaking\, it will mean the saving of a race and the restoring of a blighted land. In any event\, it is a superb adventure in neighborliness\, the parable of the Good Samaritan wrought out on a gigantic scale.” The impetus for writing this nonfiction book came from the discovery of one of the missionaries’ personal letters and documents that had been sitting in a trunk for a hundred years.\n \nWENDY ELLIOTT\, MEd\, is a writer\, designer and instructor. She is the author of a self-published young adult novel\, The Dark Triumph of Daniel Sarkisyan. She won an award for her radio play\, Millennium Madness\, and has a passion for education\, history and genealogy. Her interest in Armenia stems from four volunteer assignments she completed there in 2006-2009 for a Canadian international development organization. Wendy lives near Toronto.\n\nToronto based author WENDY ELLIOTT will be in town to present her newly published book\,GRIT AND GRACE IN A WORLD GONE MAD: Humanitarianism in Talas\, Turkey 1908 – 1923  at a special Los Angeles release event on TUESDAY\, MAY 7\, 2019 at 7:30pm at ABRIL BOOKSTORE – 415 E. SUMMARY:11 Steps Ahead: Future Forward Armenian American Visionaries
DESCRIPTION:While the original Futurists in Italy applied their aesthetics and social practices of technology and the industrial city to diverse artistic mediums in order to emphasize a movement of youth and the “new\,” futurism as a term has since been tied to other movements using diverse genres in order to advance thought and artistic output. Notably\, Afrofuturism has long explored how aspects of the African diaspora relate to technology by employing philosophy\, science fiction among other forms to narrate a history and future that reflects an alternative imagining of culture.\nThe fate of Armenia and its own diaspora following the 1915 genocide saw a rapid dispersal of Armenians around the world\, creating an integration of global influences and experiences in the Armenian people. Generations later\, children of survivors of the genocide\, born in diverse parts of the world and with wide-ranging cultural and artistic influences\, have continued to alter their own histories – and futures – by inserting themselves into progressive artistic and scientific movements\, no matter where they established new life.\nThe artists gathered here represent a shared inspiration from a constant exchange of diverse ideologies and cultures in the diaspora\, each having created a unique sensitivity toward a certain future in their works. Their respective mediums – visual storytelling and graphic novels\, production architecture\, visual art\, design\, and music (cello) – tell a story of integrating history into a present image of reality in order to serve our collective future. These stories are fabricated both in the visual depictions of their imagery and music as well as the use of traditional materials and media of our present day.

SUMMARY:Author Leslie S. Klinger - Classic American Crime Fiction of the 1920s
DESCRIPTION:Classic American Crime Fiction of the 1920s is a riveting literary collection from Edgar-winning anthologist and mystery expert Leslie S. Klinger. “As an overview of American mystery fiction of the 1920s\, this wide-ranging anthology is peerless in providing readers with a bountiful selection of the most loved books of their time\, incalculably enhanced by the scholarship of the deftly produced annotations\,” writes eminent mystery publisher Otto Penzler in his lively introduction. \nAmerican crime writing was reborn in the 1920s. After years of dominance by British authors\, new American writers—with fresh ideas about the detective and the mystery—appeared on the scene and rose to heights of popularity not witnessed since the success of the Sherlock Holmes tales in America. The decade spawned the American “crime novel”—rather than focus on the capture of the criminal\, fiction explored his or her background and state of mind\, the circumstances of the crime and its consequences. The five novels—House Without a Key\, The Benson Murder Case\, The Roman Hat Mystery\, Red Harvest\, and Little Caesar—offer some of the very best of the decade’s writing. Klinger\, who is considered to be one of the world’s foremost authorities on Sherlock Holmes and nineteenth-century mystery fiction\, provides fascinating historical and cultural annotations along the way to enhance the reader’s understanding and enjoyment of these stories. \nKlinger’s The Annotated Sandman\, a four-volume edition of Neil Gaiman‘s award-winning The Sandman comics\, for DC Comics\, appeared in 2012;[2] the third volume was published in 2014\, and the fourth volume appeared in 2015. Watchmen: The Annotated Edition was edited by Klinger for DC Comics with Dave Gibbons\, using extensive material from Alan Moore‘s original scripts; the book was published in late 2017. He is a member of The Baker Street Irregulars\, as well as numerous other Sherlockian societies. He served three terms as chapter president of the Southern California chapter of the Mystery Writers of America. He is a member of Sisters in Crime\, the Horror Writers Association (and currently serves as the Treasurer of HWA)\, the Dracula Society\, and the Transylvanian Society of Dracula. \n\nEarl Derr Biggers wrote about Charlie Chan\, a Chinese-American detective\, at a time when racism was rampant.\nS. S. Van Dine invented Philo Vance\, an effete\, rich amateur psychologist who flourished while America danced and the stock market rose.\nThe quintessential American detective Ellery Queen leapt onto the stage\, to remain popular for fifty years.\nDashiell Hammett brought readers the first novel-length mystery narrated by the Continental Op.\nW. R. Burnett created the indelible character of Rico\, the first gangster antihero.\n\n\nVisitors to the Downtown Central Library receive 3 hours FREE parking across Harvard Street at the Marketplace parking structure with validation at the InfoSpace service desk on the main floor. Handicapped parking is available on the east side of the building. Short term parking spaces are available on the east and south sides of the building. SUMMARY:Abril Bookstore presents BOGHOS SHAHMELIKIAN'S NEW BOOK: DAWN OF ARMENIAN POP MUSIC
DESCRIPTION:Author and member of the Five Fingers Band\, BOGHOS SHAHMELIKIAN will present the newly translated English edition of his book\, DAWN OF ARMENIAN POP MUSIC on THURSDAY\, JULY 26\, 2018 at 7:30pm at ABRIL BOOKSTORE – 415 E. Broadway\, Glendale\, CA. Author will be introduced by Harout Arakelian. Admission is free with reception to follow.\n\n \n\n\n\nDAWN OF ARMENIAN POP MUSIC narrates the evolution of the post Genocide contemporary Armenian popular music in the Diaspora\, commonly referred to as pop music. The Armenian word for it would be estradayin. Starting from the early 1960’s a host of Armenian singers and musical bands appeared on stage in Lebanon using for the first time non-traditional instruments such as guitar\, percussion drum-sets\, electronic organ (keyboards)\, saxophone and the like ushering the Armenian music onto a new era away from its Ottoman influences. The ‘invasion’ of these musical bands lasted until the mid-1970’s and tapered off with the onset of the Lebanese Civil war having altered the popular Armenian music. His narration makes for a fascinating reading.\n\n\nBOGHOS SHAHMELIKIAN was born in Beirut. He is a retired musician who has played with many bands and in many countries but primarily with the Five Fingers Band. He attended Nshan Palanjian Jemaran and graduated from Mekhitarian High School. He resides in Los Angeles with his wife and son and is a regular literary contributor to “Aztag” Daily and “Hairenik” Weekly.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPresented by Abril Bookstore.

SUMMARY:Meli Sarkissian presents LAKE OF SIGHS
DESCRIPTION:LAKE OF SIGHS is a novel inspired by the Armenian legend of Akhtamar. This tragedy hangs over the head of the current princess Tamar. Named after the young woman from the legend\, Princess Tamar lives on the same island as her namesake. She has no wish for her own life to repeat the tale of doomed love. Aleena\, her sister\, tells her she must forge her own path—even if it means taking a risk. Princess Tamar isn’t so sure. The thought of falling in love only to lose her beloved is too much to bear\, so she throws herself into art: fairy tales\, music\, and dance. Her passions take her to a folk dance group\, where she meets a man who shares her zest for life. But can their growing love protect him from the fate foretold by legend?\n\n\n\n\nMELI SARKISSIAN holds a bachelor’s degree in European studies and psychology and is currently earning a master’s degree in forensic psychology. Born in Cyprus\, Sarkissian was raised into an Armenian family whose proud traditions\, particularly the folk-dance group that Sarkissian was a part of\, sparked the inspiration for this novel.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPresented by Abril Bookstore. Author MELI SARKISSIAN will present her first novel inspired by the tale of Akhtamar titled\, LAKE OF SIGHS on TUESDAY\, JULY 17\, 2018 at 7:30pm at ABRIL BOOKSTORE – 415 E.
