SUMMARY:Live Talks Los Angeles in association with Glendale Arts Presents AN EVENING WITH BOB IGER
DESCRIPTION:An Evening with Robert Iger\nin conversation with Brian Grazer \ndiscussing his memoir\nThe Ride of a Lifetime: Lessons Learned from 15 Years as CEO of the Walt Disney Company \nThe CEO of Disney\, one of Time’s most influential people of 2019\, shares the ideas and values he embraced to reinvent one of the most beloved companies in the world and inspire the people who bring the magic to life. \nRobert Iger is chairman and CEO of The Walt Disney Company. Prior to this position\, he served as president and CEO beginning October 2005 and president and COO from 2000 to 2005. Iger officially joined the Disney senior management team in 1996 as chairman of the Disney-owned ABC Group and in 1999 was given the additional responsibility of president\, Walt Disney International. In that role\, Iger expanded Disney’s presence outside of the United States\, establishing the blueprint for the company’s international growth today. As chairman of the ABC Group\, Iger oversaw the broadcast television network and station group\, cable television properties\, and guided the merger between Capital Cities/ABC\, Inc. and The Walt Disney Company. He began his career at ABC in 1974. \nBrian Grazer is an Oscar-winning producer and New York Times bestselling author. His films and television shows have been nominated for forty-three Academy Awards and 195 Emmys. His credits include A Beautiful Mind\, 24\, Apollo 13\, Splash\, Arrested Development\, Empire\, 8 Mile\, Friday Night Lights\, American Gangster\, and Genius\, among others. He is the author of Face to Face: The Art of Human Connection and the New York Times bestseller A Curious Mind: The Secret to a Bigger Life. Grazer was named one of Time magazine’s 100 Most Influential People in the World and is the cofounder of Imagine Entertainment along with his longtime partner\, Ron Howard. \n\n“Nurturing creativity is less a skill than an art—especially at a company where the brand alone is synonymous with creativity. That’s a lot to live up to. Bob Iger has not only lived up to ninety-six years of groundbreaking history but has moved the Disney brand far beyond anyone’s expectations\, and he has done it with grace and audacity. This book shows you how that’s happened.”—Steven Spielberg\n\nRobert Iger became CEO of The Walt Disney Company in 2005\, during a difficult time. Competition was more intense than ever and technology was changing faster than at any time in the company’s history. His vision came down to three clear ideas: Recommit to the concept that quality matters\, embrace technology instead of fighting it\, and think bigger—think global—and turn Disney into a stronger brand in international markets. \nTwelve years later\, Disney is the largest\, most respected media company in the world\, counting Pixar\, Marvel\, Lucasfilm\, and 21st Century Fox among its properties. Its value is nearly five times what it was when Iger took over\, and he is recognized as one of the most innovative and successful CEOs of our era. \nIn The Ride of a Lifetime\, Robert Iger shares the lessons he’s learned while running Disney and leading its 200\,000 employees\, and he explores the principles that are necessary for true leadership\, including: \n• Optimism. Even in the face of difficulty\, an optimistic leader will find the path toward the best possible outcome and focus on that\, rather than give in to pessimism and blaming.\n• Courage. Leaders have to be willing to take risks and place big bets. Fear of failure destroys creativity.\n• Decisiveness. All decisions\, no matter how difficult\, can be made on a timely basis. Indecisiveness is both wasteful and destructive to morale.\n• Fairness. Treat people decently\, with empathy\, and be accessible to them. \nThis book is about the relentless curiosity that has driven Iger for forty-five years\, since the day he started as the lowliest studio grunt at ABC. It’s also about thoughtfulness and respect\, and a decency-over-dollars approach that has become the bedrock of every project and partnership Iger pursues\, from a deep friendship with Steve Jobs in his final years to an abiding love of the Star Wars mythology. \nTicket sales are final.  No refunds. \nPERFORMANCE ADVISORIES\nAge Suitability: 18+\nPhoto/Video Recording: Non-Flash only\nLate Seating: Latecomers will be seated at the discretion of the event’s Presenter

SUMMARY:The Glendale Historical Society presents ICONS OF ARCHITECTURE HOME TOUR
DESCRIPTION:ADMISSION\nHome Tour Is Sold Out! \nThe “Icons of Architecture” Home Tour is SOLD OUT\, and no additional tickets are available. We unfortunately cannot accommodate anyone who has not already purchased a ticket. \nDETAILS\nThe Glendale Historical Society is pleased to present its “Icons of Architecture” Home Tour. This year’s tour includes five exceptional homes in Glendale designed by some of the most celebrated and influential architects of the 20th century: \nThe five homes featured on this year’s Icons of Architecture Home Tour are:\n\n\nTaylor House (1964): A Mid-century Modern work of art designed by master architect Richard Neutra\, who helped define modernism in Southern California and around the world. The home’s rooms are cleverly separated by overlapping walls that provide visual anchors\, and the distinction between the indoors and outdoors seems to evaporate in the space. Additionally\, the living room’s fireplace appears to float on a cantilevered brick plinth surrounded by brick-edged white plaster. \n\n\nSchaffer House (1949): A Mid-century Modern masterpiece by renowned architect John Lautner. A fairly early Lautner\, it is considered a significant example of his work that bears the unmistakable stamp of his style\, exemplified in the asymmetrical plan and massing\, horizontal emphasis\, use of natural materials (redwood) and glass\, and spaces that blur the lines between indoors and outdoors. The house gained national and international recognition after being cast\, along with actor Colin Firth\, as the star of A Single Man (2009)\, directed by fashion designer Tom Ford. \n\n\nPerkins House (1940): A “Country Colonial” home designed by noted architect Gerard Colcord for his sister\, Eunice Colcord Perkins. The house is a one-and-a-half story farmhouse cottage clad in wide wood siding and built with a combination of materials meant to evoke nostalgia\, such as painted wood\, fieldstone and brick\, and various sizes of multi-paned windows. One of the signature characteristics of Colcord’s farmhouse homes was that they were purposely designed to look as if they had been added onto over the years\, as if they had evolved over time. \n\n\nStory House (1928): A Spanish Colonial Revival home designed by “architect to the stars” Robert Finkelhor. The modest-sized house features a living room with high ceilings and spectacular views that manages to be both cozy and grand. The tongue-and-groove wood ceiling includes a decorative joist at the center with chamfered edges that is supported on decorative painted corbels. Finkelhor is perhaps best known for designing the Bob and Dolores Hope Estate in Toluca Lake. \n\n\nCalori House: (1926): An Expressionist/Spanish Colonial Revival home designed by the highly-accomplished architect Frank Lloyd Wright\, Jr\, who worked in the shadow of his famous architect father\, Frank Lloyd Wright. Not known as a proponent of Period Revival styles\, Lloyd Wright’s Spanish designs are highly sculptural\, expressed in strong volumes and unusual massing\, and defined by large expanses of white stucco walls. In typical Wrightian fashion\, Calori House features an abstract arrangement of shed and gable roofs that seem to pose incongruously over the volume below\, while two brackets with a stepped motif support a small enclosed balcony\, creating a cave-like geometric entrance into the house. \n\n\nFor more information\, email events@glendalehistorical.org or call 818-242-7447

SUMMARY:Russian Ballet Theatre Presents SWAN LAKE
DESCRIPTION:Those faithful to the tradition of Swan Lake must see Russian Ballet Theatre’s new production of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s timeless classic. Choreographer Nadezhda Kalinina (Mariinsky Theatre\, Teatro Lirico\, Omsk State Music Theatre) lovingly retouches the oldest St. Petersburg version of the ballet and adds her vision and something more that undoubtedly will leave audiences flushed with emotion. Designed by the young\, accomplished Sergei Novikov (Mariinsky Theatre\, Omsk State Music Theatre\, St. Petersburg State Music Hall)\, these are in the century-old tradition of the great theatrical masters. SFX makeup by Award-winning Irina Strukova (Crazy Rich Asians\, Netflix\, HBO) completes the already perfect glittering fantasy that is Swan Lake ! \nRussian Ballet Theatre has partnered with PLUS1\, an initiative that connects artists with causes\, so that $1 from every ticket sold will support local public school teachers and their classroom projects in Glendale and surrounding areas through DonorsChoose.org. \nPERFORMANCE ADVISORY\nLate Seating: Latecomers will be seated at the discretion of the event’s Presenter\nFor additional information regarding PLUS1:\nContact info@voiceartgroup.com

SUMMARY:Abril Bookstore to host an evening with leading Armenian folk singer Hasmik Harutyunyan
DESCRIPTION:One of Armenia’s leading folk singers\, HASMIK HARUTYUNYAN will give a special performance and presentation in Armenian on occasion of her newly released book/cd combos\, ORORNER (Lullabies) and LORIK on SATURDAY\, SEPTEMBER 21\, 2019 at 7:30pm at 415 E. Broadway\, Glendale\, CA. \n\nAdmission is free. Priority reserved seating also available for $15 a seat by visiting www.itsmyseat.com/abrilbooks or by calling (818) 243-4112.\n\n \n\nHASMIK HARUTYUNYAN is world-renowned for her work with Yerevan’s Shoghaken Ensemble and for her mellifluous renditions of Armenian lullabies\, one of the most ancient and evocative genres in Armenian music. Her quietly passionate interpretations of lullabies from historical villages across the Armenian plateau offer a mesmerizing glimpse at a lost world. She draws strength and inspiration from her ancestors in the province of Mush in Historic Armenia\, especially her grandmother\, Mafo\, who sang to her as a child. In addition to songs sung by her family\, Hasmik learned many of the folk songs in her repertoire from old women who had emigrated from the Armenian Highlands to eastern Armenia before or during the Armenian massacres and genocide of 1915\, as well as from their descendants and old song collections.\n\n \nThis event celebrates the release of Ororner (Lullabies)\, Harutyunyan’s new book and CD anthology of 57 lullabies\, and Lorik\, with children’s songs composed by Komitas Vardapet\, and folk songs from Historic Armenia. The event is dedicated to the 150th anniversary of Komitas Vardapet\, who saved Armenian songs and melodies and passed them onto us.

SUMMARY:Abril Bookstore & Tekeyan Cultural Association proudly present ARPI SARAFIAN's ENDLESS CROSSINGS
DESCRIPTION:In a wide-ranging and diverse mix of essays published over a span of over thirty years Sarafian explores the complexities of the immigrant experience.  In a new definition of reality\, she contends\, survival requires the negotiation of several worlds. “Ethnic” is past its definition of the clash of two cultures. Indeed\, deconstructing the ethnic/mainstream polarity\, that is removing Armenianness\, and by extension any other ethnicity\, from opposition to the “System” may well be the only hope for survival\, if at all possible\, for Armenians in the Diaspora. Sarafian would like to see the hyphen dropped from Armenian-American (as well as from ChineseAmerican\, Mexican-American or from any other hyphenated American) as it creates a hierarchy which inevitably leads to the valuing of the socalled “majority” culture and the belittling of the “other\,” the “lesser” culture. A rich and vibrant culture like ours is capable of continual renewal and cannot but find its way into the mainstream. Thus\, rather than deplore the gradual loss of our ethnic identity\, we could help make “ethnic” a relative term with no stigma attached to it. \nThe book covers a range of subjects such as literary figures including Leon Zaven Surmelian\, Peter Najarian\, Micheline Aharonian Marcom\, Aris Janigian\, Garin Hovannisian\, Tina Demirjian\, David Kherdian\, artists Kardash Onnig\, Seeroon Yeretzian\, musicians Arpine and George Pehlivanian\, and various theatrical performances\, art exhibits\, and conferences.\n  \n\nARPI SARAFIAN holds a Ph.D. from the University of Southern California and a B.A. and M.A. from the American University of Beirut. She was a lecturer in English Language and Literature at the California State University\, Los Angeles from 1978 to retirement in 2014. Sarafian has also taught at the California State University\, Dominguez Hills and at Loyola Marymount University. She has published articles in The Armenian Observer\, ararat Literary Quarterly\, The Armenian Mirror-Spectator\, Armenian International Magazine (AIM)\, Virginia Woolf Miscellany\, Publication of the Modern Language Association (PMLA)\, Journal of the Society of Armenian Studies (JSAS) and the Los Angeles Times.\n\n\n\nTUESDAY\, SEPTEMBER 17\, 2019– 7:30PM\nABRIL BOOKSTORE\n415 E.
