SUMMARY:Rotary District 5280 Presents Pageant of the Arts
DESCRIPTION:The Pageant of the Arts is a combination of four competitions for high school students in the areas of art\, dance\, music (vocalist and instrumentalist)\, and speech.  The competitions are held simultaneously in a building complex at Loyola Marymount University which includes an art exhibit space\, a music auditorium\, a dance studio and an adjacent building for the speech contest.  Individuals and teams compete for 1st\, 2nd\, 3rd place and Honorable Mention in each contest. \n\nChair\, Kathrine Russell\, and her team do an excellent job of organizing and directing each area of competition.  They have all been performing this labor of love for several years and are committed to the event.\n\nEach club in the District can enter one student in each area of competition.  Some clubs conduct their own competitions in order to send the top winner to the Pageant.  However\, it is not necessary to host a competition.  Clubs may have their local high school\, boys & girls club\, or YMCA nominate a student to compete in any one of the areas of competition.  Attending the Pageant is an awesome experience as you see the wonderful talent that is brought to the event.\n\nDistrict Rotarians are strongly encouraged to attend this dynamic event.  We also invite the top winners to attend either the District conference or a District breakfast to showcase their talent.  It is important for clubs to begin the process now to identify possible high school students for these competitions.  Any questions can be directed to Kathrine Russell at her email address: kruss922@gmail.com

SUMMARY:Musical Theatre Guild Presents KISMET
DESCRIPTION:Single Tickets go on sale at 12:00 AM on 08/19/19 \nMusical Theatre Guild presents a Staged Concert Version of\nKISMET \nMusic & Lyrics: Robert Wright & George Forrest from the themes of Alexander Borodin\nBook: Charles Lederer & Luther Davis\nBased on the play by Edward Knoblock \nSet in the exotic time of the fabled Arabian Nights\, KISMET spins the fateful adventure-filled tale of glib-tongued street poet Hajj\, a resourceful seller of rhymes\, and his beautiful daughter Marsinah. It weaves a lush tapestry of romance and melody and features many favorites including ‘Stranger in Paradise\,’ ‘And This Is My Beloved’ and ‘Baubles\, Bangles and Beads.’ \nThe Los Angeles Civic Light Opera commissioned composers Wright and Forrest to adapt the luscious classical melodies of Alexander Borodin. KISMET premiered in Los Angeles before opening on Broadway in 1953 during the middle of a newspaper strike. Having no reviews to help sell tickets\, KISMET was perhaps the first musical to use the power of television to promote a show. It ran for 583 performances\, starring Alfred Drake\, Joan Diener and Richard Kiley. The recipient of three Tony® Awards\, including Best Musical\, KISMET was adapted into an MGM film in 1955. \nPERFORMANCE ADVISORY\nLate Seating: Latecomers will be seated at the discretion of the event’s Presenter

SUMMARY:La Diosa Presents EVA AYLLÓN 50TH ANNIVERSARY CONCERT
DESCRIPTION:Eva Ayllón en Concierto \nWith a legendary voice that embodies the spirit of a nation\, Eva Ayllón is one of Peru’s most enduring stars. She’s been called the ‘Tina Turner from Peru’ and the ‘Queen of landó’ (a traditional Afro-Peruvian musical form) for her larger-than-life stage personality and fearsome dance chops. Infused with colorful sounds and flavors from the coastal plains of Lima\, Ayllón’s music overflows with her country’s indigenous\, African and Spanish musical heritage in a style called música criolla\, in which call-and-response\, complex syncopation\, and polyrhythms combine with sweet\, melancholic melodies to create a unique and powerful sound. \nPERFORMANCE ADVISORIES\nPerformance Language: Spanish\nLate Seating Policy: Latecomers will be seated at the discretion of the event’s Presenters

SUMMARY:Los Angeles Ballet Presents THE SLEEPING BEAUTY
DESCRIPTION:The Sleeping Beauty is one of the greatest and most treasured story ballets of all time. Inspired by Charles Perrault’s story ‘La belle au bois dormant’ or ‘The beauty sleeping in the wood\,’ Marius Petipa created this wonderful production\, considered to be the most authentic of his work and the epitome of classical ballet. This cherished story\, however\, represents much more than just a fairytale. It is about our potential inner beauty that lies dormant\, poisoned by the powers of evil\, forced into hiding and left to wait to be awakened by the power of love. \nPERFORMANCE ADVISORY\nLate Seating: Latecomers will be seated at the discretion of the event’s Presenter
