SUMMARY:Abril Bookstore & Tekeyan Cultural Association proudly present ARPI SARAFIAN's ENDLESS CROSSINGS
DESCRIPTION:In a wide-ranging and diverse mix of essays published over a span of over thirty years Sarafian explores the complexities of the immigrant experience.  In a new definition of reality\, she contends\, survival requires the negotiation of several worlds. “Ethnic” is past its definition of the clash of two cultures. Indeed\, deconstructing the ethnic/mainstream polarity\, that is removing Armenianness\, and by extension any other ethnicity\, from opposition to the “System” may well be the only hope for survival\, if at all possible\, for Armenians in the Diaspora. Sarafian would like to see the hyphen dropped from Armenian-American (as well as from ChineseAmerican\, Mexican-American or from any other hyphenated American) as it creates a hierarchy which inevitably leads to the valuing of the socalled “majority” culture and the belittling of the “other\,” the “lesser” culture. A rich and vibrant culture like ours is capable of continual renewal and cannot but find its way into the mainstream. Thus\, rather than deplore the gradual loss of our ethnic identity\, we could help make “ethnic” a relative term with no stigma attached to it. \nThe book covers a range of subjects such as literary figures including Leon Zaven Surmelian\, Peter Najarian\, Micheline Aharonian Marcom\, Aris Janigian\, Garin Hovannisian\, Tina Demirjian\, David Kherdian\, artists Kardash Onnig\, Seeroon Yeretzian\, musicians Arpine and George Pehlivanian\, and various theatrical performances\, art exhibits\, and conferences.\n  \n\nARPI SARAFIAN holds a Ph.D. from the University of Southern California and a B.A. and M.A. from the American University of Beirut. She was a lecturer in English Language and Literature at the California State University\, Los Angeles from 1978 to retirement in 2014. Sarafian has also taught at the California State University\, Dominguez Hills and at Loyola Marymount University. She has published articles in The Armenian Observer\, ararat Literary Quarterly\, The Armenian Mirror-Spectator\, Armenian International Magazine (AIM)\, Virginia Woolf Miscellany\, Publication of the Modern Language Association (PMLA)\, Journal of the Society of Armenian Studies (JSAS) and the Los Angeles Times.\n\n\n\nTUESDAY\, SEPTEMBER 17\, 2019– 7:30PM\nABRIL BOOKSTORE\n415 E. SUMMARY:Abril Bookstore to host an evening with leading Armenian folk singer Hasmik Harutyunyan
DESCRIPTION:One of Armenia’s leading folk singers\, HASMIK HARUTYUNYAN will give a special performance and presentation in Armenian on occasion of her newly released book/cd combos\, ORORNER (Lullabies) and LORIK on SATURDAY\, SEPTEMBER 21\, 2019 at 7:30pm at 415 E. Broadway\, Glendale\, CA. \n\nAdmission is free. Priority reserved seating also available for $15 a seat by visiting www.itsmyseat.com/abrilbooks or by calling (818) 243-4112.\n\n \n\nHASMIK HARUTYUNYAN is world-renowned for her work with Yerevan’s Shoghaken Ensemble and for her mellifluous renditions of Armenian lullabies\, one of the most ancient and evocative genres in Armenian music. Her quietly passionate interpretations of lullabies from historical villages across the Armenian plateau offer a mesmerizing glimpse at a lost world. She draws strength and inspiration from her ancestors in the province of Mush in Historic Armenia\, especially her grandmother\, Mafo\, who sang to her as a child. In addition to songs sung by her family\, Hasmik learned many of the folk songs in her repertoire from old women who had emigrated from the Armenian Highlands to eastern Armenia before or during the Armenian massacres and genocide of 1915\, as well as from their descendants and old song collections.\n\n \nThis event celebrates the release of Ororner (Lullabies)\, Harutyunyan’s new book and CD anthology of 57 lullabies\, and Lorik\, with children’s songs composed by Komitas Vardapet\, and folk songs from Historic Armenia. The event is dedicated to the 150th anniversary of Komitas Vardapet\, who saved Armenian songs and melodies and passed them onto us.

SUMMARY:The Glendale Historical Society presents ICONS OF ARCHITECTURE HOME TOUR
DESCRIPTION:ADMISSION\nHome Tour Is Sold Out! \nThe “Icons of Architecture” Home Tour is SOLD OUT\, and no additional tickets are available. We unfortunately cannot accommodate anyone who has not already purchased a ticket. \nDETAILS\nThe Glendale Historical Society is pleased to present its “Icons of Architecture” Home Tour. This year’s tour includes five exceptional homes in Glendale designed by some of the most celebrated and influential architects of the 20th century: \nThe five homes featured on this year’s Icons of Architecture Home Tour are:\n\n\nTaylor House (1964): A Mid-century Modern work of art designed by master architect Richard Neutra\, who helped define modernism in Southern California and around the world. The home’s rooms are cleverly separated by overlapping walls that provide visual anchors\, and the distinction between the indoors and outdoors seems to evaporate in the space. Additionally\, the living room’s fireplace appears to float on a cantilevered brick plinth surrounded by brick-edged white plaster. \n\n\nSchaffer House (1949): A Mid-century Modern masterpiece by renowned architect John Lautner. A fairly early Lautner\, it is considered a significant example of his work that bears the unmistakable stamp of his style\, exemplified in the asymmetrical plan and massing\, horizontal emphasis\, use of natural materials (redwood) and glass\, and spaces that blur the lines between indoors and outdoors. The house gained national and international recognition after being cast\, along with actor Colin Firth\, as the star of A Single Man (2009)\, directed by fashion designer Tom Ford. \n\n\nPerkins House (1940): A “Country Colonial” home designed by noted architect Gerard Colcord for his sister\, Eunice Colcord Perkins. The house is a one-and-a-half story farmhouse cottage clad in wide wood siding and built with a combination of materials meant to evoke nostalgia\, such as painted wood\, fieldstone and brick\, and various sizes of multi-paned windows. One of the signature characteristics of Colcord’s farmhouse homes was that they were purposely designed to look as if they had been added onto over the years\, as if they had evolved over time. \n\n\nStory House (1928): A Spanish Colonial Revival home designed by “architect to the stars” Robert Finkelhor. The modest-sized house features a living room with high ceilings and spectacular views that manages to be both cozy and grand. The tongue-and-groove wood ceiling includes a decorative joist at the center with chamfered edges that is supported on decorative painted corbels. Finkelhor is perhaps best known for designing the Bob and Dolores Hope Estate in Toluca Lake. \n\n\nCalori House: (1926): An Expressionist/Spanish Colonial Revival home designed by the highly-accomplished architect Frank Lloyd Wright\, Jr\, who worked in the shadow of his famous architect father\, Frank Lloyd Wright. Not known as a proponent of Period Revival styles\, Lloyd Wright’s Spanish designs are highly sculptural\, expressed in strong volumes and unusual massing\, and defined by large expanses of white stucco walls. In typical Wrightian fashion\, Calori House features an abstract arrangement of shed and gable roofs that seem to pose incongruously over the volume below\, while two brackets with a stepped motif support a small enclosed balcony\, creating a cave-like geometric entrance into the house. \n\n\nFor more information\, email events@glendalehistorical.org or call 818-242-7447
