SUMMARY:Armenian Film Society and Abril Bookstore present ECHOES OF SURVIVAL
DESCRIPTION:Abril Bookstore’s ARMENIAN FILM SOCIETY will present a screening of ECHOES OF SURVIVAL\, a new documentary film featuring artists Jackie Kazarian\, Ara Dinkjian\, Ara Oshagan\, Scout Tufankjian\, and John Berberian\, followed by a discussion with director\, AVO JOHN KAMBOURIAN on FRIDAY\, AUGUST 3\, 2018 at 7:30pm at ABRIL BOOKSTORE – 415 E. Broadway\, Glendale\, CA. Admission for Armenian Film Society members only. Please call (818) 243-4112 for details.\n\nECHOES OF SURVIVAL is an experimental documentary series about the ambiguity of what it means to be an Armenian living in America today. In April 2015\, during the 100th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide\, the author found himself drawn to the idea of how certain artists around the United States view themselves as Armenian\, and how their identities shape their work. This project is an attempt to better understand who we are today\, and how the culture has survived through these artists and their work.\n\n\n\nAVO JOHN KAMBOURIAN was born and raised in Los Angeles. He picked up a camera at age 10 and cast his friends in comedic short films about Batman. Later he picked up editing while still in high school. In 2010\, he traveled to Armenia\, where he had an internship at Bars Media Studio\, a documentary company. Upon returning to the US he earned his BA in Communication at UC San Diego. In subsequent years he returned to Armenia in between jobs as a PA\, Assistant Editor\, to work on his own documentaries about the region. Avo John works in post-production as an editor\, having worked for companies such as Vice\, Nat Geo\, Hit RECord\, and BMG Films.\n  \n\n\nPresented by the Armenian Film Society and Abril Bookstore.

Broadway\, Glendale\, CA. Admission is free. Author will be introduced by Armen Abelyan\, executive director of Equality Armenia.\n \nA POET IN WASHINGTON HEIGHTS is a book by Christopher Atamian that celebrates the extraordinary cultural mosaic and landscape of Washington Heights in playful\, nostalgic rhyme that honors familial love as much as urban romance\, cutting to the core of queer desire. Drawing on influences as disparate as Nigoghos Sarafian and Patti Smith\, Chris mesmerizes the reader with mythological figures and spiritual reverie\, ultimately offering redemption for our troubled times—through his Armenian American and native New Yorker eyes. CHRISTOPHER ATAMIAN is a noted writer and creative producer of Italian and Armenian background. He is an alumnus of Harvard University (BA in Literature\, Magna Cum Laude)\, Columbia Business School (MBA in International Media and Marketing)\, USC Film School (MFA in TV and Film Production) and a former Fulbright Scholar at the Zurich Polytechnic Institute (ETH). Apart from creative endeavors and professional activities as a senior executive in leading media companies and consultancies (ABC\, Ogilvy & Mather\, J.P. Morgan)\, Atamian has concentrated on community activism. He is the former President and a current board member of AGLA New York and in 2004 founded Nor Alik\, a non-profit cultural organization responsible for producing the First New York Armenian International Film Festival. His music videos have been aired on MTV and his short films have been screened around the world. Atamian also co-produced the OBIE Award-winning play Trouble in Paradise in 2006\, as well as several music videos and short films. Atamian was selected for the 2009 Venice Biennale on the basis of his video Sarafian’s Desire and received a 2015 Ellis Island Medal of Honor. He continues to contribute critical pieces to leading publications such as The New York Times Book Review and The Huffington Post\, Scenes Media and The Weekly Standard\, while working on other creative endeavors in film and theater. He has been awarded two PEN Writers’ grants and the Tölölyan Literary Prize twice as well. He was born and still resides in New York City.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPresented by Abril Bookstore. Sponsored by Equality Armenia.
