She has taken private lessons from the very respected professor Vahid Sheykhian of the Fine Arts faculty at Tehran University. The Armenian Painter’s Association in Yerevan officially invited her to Armenia\, where she had her first solo exhibition in 2014. She was awarded honorary membership by the association. This recognition has encouraged her to focus more passionately on her art.\n \nPresented by Roslin Art Gallery.

SUMMARY:Artists For Kids Presents LORIK FILM BY MICHAEL POGHOSYAN
DESCRIPTION:Artists For Kids presents LORIK\, an Armenian language film by Michael Poghosyan. \nThe film’s protagonist is actor Lorik\, Laurence Olivier’s namesake. \nWhen Lorik was a child\, he lost his parents\, who also were actors. Raised by his aunt\, Lorik realizes his childhood dream and becomes an actor\, but he lives in the imaginary world of his roles. He is now Cyrano de Bergerac\, then King Richard. However\, the main role he plays is not performed on the stage but in the conduct of his own life: the Rabbit from ‘Alice in Wonderland.’ Lorik does not perceive today’s realities and is afraid of being himself\, so he hides behind the masks of his characters. He is indifferent to the opinions of others and lives only through the feelings of his characters. \nSociety\, meanwhile\, worries about completely different issues. Social inequality\, the crisis of the confidence in authorities\, and a sense of hopelessness are increasing in the society. \nWhen the theatre is closed by an owner indifferent to the fate of its actors\, it seems to Lorik that\, with the absence of the theater and his roles\, his life is over. But actually his real life is just beginning. After the shock\, something strange happens to Lorik. Is this a dream or a delusion? Lorik begins to be transformed externally into other people and has to live episodes from their lives\, all the while remaining the same Lorik internally. Those life episodes are not easy; they are real tests. Through them Lorik learns to understand and feel the happiness and pain of others as his own and to experience love. Thus the rebirth of his soul begins. \nPERFORMANCE ADVISORIES\nPerformance Language: Armenian with English Subtitles\nLate Seating: At discretion of the event’s Presenter

SUMMARY:Author Leslie S. Klinger - Classic American Crime Fiction of the 1920s
DESCRIPTION:Classic American Crime Fiction of the 1920s is a riveting literary collection from Edgar-winning anthologist and mystery expert Leslie S. Klinger. “As an overview of American mystery fiction of the 1920s\, this wide-ranging anthology is peerless in providing readers with a bountiful selection of the most loved books of their time\, incalculably enhanced by the scholarship of the deftly produced annotations\,” writes eminent mystery publisher Otto Penzler in his lively introduction. \nAmerican crime writing was reborn in the 1920s. After years of dominance by British authors\, new American writers—with fresh ideas about the detective and the mystery—appeared on the scene and rose to heights of popularity not witnessed since the success of the Sherlock Holmes tales in America. The decade spawned the American “crime novel”—rather than focus on the capture of the criminal\, fiction explored his or her background and state of mind\, the circumstances of the crime and its consequences. The five novels—House Without a Key\, The Benson Murder Case\, The Roman Hat Mystery\, Red Harvest\, and Little Caesar—offer some of the very best of the decade’s writing. Klinger\, who is considered to be one of the world’s foremost authorities on Sherlock Holmes and nineteenth-century mystery fiction\, provides fascinating historical and cultural annotations along the way to enhance the reader’s understanding and enjoyment of these stories. \nKlinger’s The Annotated Sandman\, a four-volume edition of Neil Gaiman‘s award-winning The Sandman comics\, for DC Comics\, appeared in 2012;[2] the third volume was published in 2014\, and the fourth volume appeared in 2015. Watchmen: The Annotated Edition was edited by Klinger for DC Comics with Dave Gibbons\, using extensive material from Alan Moore‘s original scripts; the book was published in late 2017. He is a member of The Baker Street Irregulars\, as well as numerous other Sherlockian societies. He served three terms as chapter president of the Southern California chapter of the Mystery Writers of America. He is a member of Sisters in Crime\, the Horror Writers Association (and currently serves as the Treasurer of HWA)\, the Dracula Society\, and the Transylvanian Society of Dracula. \n\nEarl Derr Biggers wrote about Charlie Chan\, a Chinese-American detective\, at a time when racism was rampant.\nS. S. Van Dine invented Philo Vance\, an effete\, rich amateur psychologist who flourished while America danced and the stock market rose.\nThe quintessential American detective Ellery Queen leapt onto the stage\, to remain popular for fifty years.\nDashiell Hammett brought readers the first novel-length mystery narrated by the Continental Op.\nW. R. Burnett created the indelible character of Rico\, the first gangster antihero.\n\n\nVisitors to the Downtown Central Library receive 3 hours FREE parking across Harvard Street at the Marketplace parking structure with validation at the InfoSpace service desk on the main floor. Handicapped parking is available on the east side of the building. Short term parking spaces are available on the east and south sides of the building. Metered parking is available on Harvard Street and on the west side of the building in Lot #10.

SUMMARY:Leo Eguiarte & Melly Trochez: RITUAL/S
DESCRIPTION:Leo Eguiarte’s ongoing series delves into a world of symbolism and graphic imagery\, reflecting Eguiarte’s interests in signs and everyday ritual. While much of the work suggests esoterism and metaphysical states or landscapes\, Eguiarte’s approach is particularly subtle\, focusing on the unspoken customs that particular groups or individuals practice daily. As a kind of re-appropriation of what he sees as an already-appropriated point of view of some occultist groups and beliefs\, his imagery evolves out of any concrete attachment to belief or practice\, and enters into a meticulous and precise graphic world with simple vocabularies. His circuit panel series strives toward a kind of streamlined perfection: symmetrical lines\, patterned dots\, concentric circles\, prisms and a consistently limited color scheme of magenta\, pink and turquoise that allow for infinite variations on a theme. \nMelly Trochez’s work deals specifically with rituals: activities that are passed on culturally through generations that become embedded in notions of identity. Particularly interested in observing – and often commenting on – standards of beauty in Latina culture\, Trochez’s larger format acrylic paintings depict characters from her own life (sometimes even herself) participating in beautifying routines: ironing and bleaching hair\, applying sunblock\, mirror gazing – many rituals that become unconscious\, those that we forget why we even began doing them. Comments made when we were younger\, images seen during developing years\, advice and critique passed down through generations become an everyday practice. Trochez is pointing at these through her depictions that carry the cultural focus to an image. In doing so\, she highlights these rituals and brings them into question – a question that feels more like curiosity\, or a simple noticing\, rather than outward critique or commentary. \nOpening Reception: November 17\, 2018\, 7:00 – 10:00 pm \nGallery Hours: Tuesday\, 1:00 – 6:00 pm; Wednesday & Thursday\, 11:00 – 4:00 or by appointment \nace/121 Gallery is located at 121 N. Kenwood Street\, Glendale CA 91206 (entrance via Louise and the YMCA Parking lot). \nThis exhibit is made possible by the Eisner Foundation and LA County Arts Commission. SUMMARY:Armenian Film Society and Abril Bookstore present ECHOES OF SURVIVAL
DESCRIPTION:Abril Bookstore’s ARMENIAN FILM SOCIETY will present a screening of ECHOES OF SURVIVAL\, a new documentary film featuring artists Jackie Kazarian\, Ara Dinkjian\, Ara Oshagan\, Scout Tufankjian\, and John Berberian\, followed by a discussion with director\, AVO JOHN KAMBOURIAN on FRIDAY\, AUGUST 3\, 2018 at 7:30pm at ABRIL BOOKSTORE – 415 E. Broadway\, Glendale\, CA. Admission for Armenian Film Society members only. Please call (818) 243-4112 for details.\n\nECHOES OF SURVIVAL is an experimental documentary series about the ambiguity of what it means to be an Armenian living in America today. In April 2015\, during the 100th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide\, the author found himself drawn to the idea of how certain artists around the United States view themselves as Armenian\, and how their identities shape their work. This project is an attempt to better understand who we are today\, and how the culture has survived through these artists and their work.\n\n\n\nAVO JOHN KAMBOURIAN was born and raised in Los Angeles. He picked up a camera at age 10 and cast his friends in comedic short films about Batman. Later he picked up editing while still in high school. In 2010\, he traveled to Armenia\, where he had an internship at Bars Media Studio\, a documentary company. Upon returning to the US he earned his BA in Communication at UC San Diego. In subsequent years he returned to Armenia in between jobs as a PA\, Assistant Editor\, to work on his own documentaries about the region. Avo John works in post-production as an editor\, having worked for companies such as Vice\, Nat Geo\, Hit RECord\, and BMG Films.\n  \n\n\nPresented by the Armenian Film Society and Abril Bookstore.

SUMMARY:Christopher Atamian presents A POET IN WASHINGTON HEIGHTS
DESCRIPTION:New York Author CHRISTOPHER ATAMIAN will be in town to present his latest book\, A POET IN WASHINGTON HEIGHTS on THURSDAY\,JUNE 21\, 2018 at 7:30pm at ABRIL BOOKSTORE – 415 E. Broadway\, Glendale\, CA. Admission is free. Author will be introduced by Armen Abelyan\, executive director of Equality Armenia.\n \nA POET IN WASHINGTON HEIGHTS is a book by Christopher Atamian that celebrates the extraordinary cultural mosaic and landscape of Washington Heights in playful\, nostalgic rhyme that honors familial love as much as urban romance\, cutting to the core of queer desire. Drawing on influences as disparate as Nigoghos Sarafian and Patti Smith\, Chris mesmerizes the reader with mythological figures and spiritual reverie\, ultimately offering redemption for our troubled times—through his Armenian American and native New Yorker eyes. CHRISTOPHER ATAMIAN is a noted writer and creative producer of Italian and Armenian background. He is an alumnus of Harvard University (BA in Literature\, Magna Cum Laude)\, Columbia Business School (MBA in International Media and Marketing)\, USC Film School (MFA in TV and Film Production) and a former Fulbright Scholar at the Zurich Polytechnic Institute (ETH). Apart from creative endeavors and professional activities as a senior executive in leading media companies and consultancies (ABC\, Ogilvy & Mather\, J.P. Morgan)\, Atamian has concentrated on community activism. He is the former President and a current board member of AGLA New York and in 2004 founded Nor Alik\, a non-profit cultural organization responsible for producing the First New York Armenian International Film Festival. His music videos have been aired on MTV and his short films have been screened around the world. Atamian also co-produced the OBIE Award-winning play Trouble in Paradise in 2006\, as well as several music videos and short films. Atamian was selected for the 2009 Venice Biennale on the basis of his video Sarafian’s Desire and received a 2015 Ellis Island Medal of Honor. He continues to contribute critical pieces to leading publications such as The New York Times Book Review and The Huffington Post\, Scenes Media and The Weekly Standard\, while working on other creative endeavors in film and theater. He has been awarded two PEN Writers’ grants and the Tölölyan Literary Prize twice as well. He was born and still resides in New York City.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPresented by Abril Bookstore. Sponsored by Equality Armenia.
