SUMMARY:Sayat Nova's ETERNAL ROSE
DESCRIPTION:SAYAT NOVA’S ETERNAL ROSE will be a musical evening with the Kerovpyan Trio from the Kotchnak Ensemble featuring vocalist Virginia Pattie Kerovpyan\, kanounist Aram Kerovpyan and percussionist Vahan Kerovpyan. The ensemble formed in 1980 in Paris and specializes in Armenian folk and troubadour music. Each performance is a unique experience in that they follow the tradition of perpetual recreation by means of improvisation. Sayat Nova (1722-1795) was a musician and poet at the Georgian court who later became a priest. He was one of the rare ashough-troubadours whose poems have reached us. Of the numerous poems copied in his notebook\, only 27 have melodies today\, having survived through the oral tradition. \nVIRGINIA PATTIE KEROVPYAN was born in Washington\, D.C. and moved to Paris in the 1970’s. She has performed and recorded with various early music\, as well as contemporary music\, ensembles. Soloist of the Kotchnak and Akn ensembles\, she has specialized in Armenian song since 1980. Her interpretation brings to the forefront the essence of this music\, making its discovery and transmission more accessible. \nARAM KEROVPYAN was born in Istanbul\, Turkey. He learned to play the kanoun and studied the Near Easternmusic system with Master musician Saadeddin Öktenay. Moving to Paris\, he joined the Kotchnak ensemble\, performing Armenian folk and troubadour music\, and in 1985 established the Akn ensemble specializing in Armenian liturgical chant. He has been the master-singer of the Armenian cathedral in Paris since 1990. He is active in the world of theater as musician\, teacher\, and composer. SUMMARY:Brand Associates' Dance Series
DESCRIPTION:The Brand Associates’ Dance Series presents three performances this spring at Brand Library & Art Center\, 1601 W. Mountain St.\, Glendale\, CA 91201. This series curated by Jame Nichols (Executive Producer and Founder of Celebrate Dance at the Alex Theatre)  presents top dance companies from Southern California performing site specific work in non-traditional performance spaces around Brand Library. Versa-Style continues to uphold these values and thanks the creators of these powerful movements who continue to inspire us today by creating highly energetic work that fuses dances that are culturally significant to our community. Jackie Lopez aka Miss Funk & Leigh Foaad aka Breeze-lee are the Founders and Artistic Directors of Versa-Style Dance Company. Together they share a common passion for dance and performance\, this connection resulted in the creation of Versa-Style in 2005. These forms include Hip-Hop styles such as 90s Hip-Hop\, House\, Popping\, Locking\, Whacking and Boogaloo\, and Afro- Latin styles such as Salsa\, Merengue\, Cumbia and Afro-Cuban to name a few. As a reaction to the widespread media misrepresentation of these dance forms\, Versa-Style specifically aims to perform for the youth of Los Angeles to instill the roots\, history\, and social and political issues surrounding the art of our generation.Hip-Hop breaks color lines by creating a forum where people come together for a common passion rather than grouping themselves by race or socio-economic backgrounds. Versa-Style demonstrates freedom of expression\, freedom of individuality\, hard work\, self-discipline and dedication to the form. \nThe performances are free and open to the public. Seating is limited. An accessible entrance and parking is located on the East side of the building. For more information contact\, 818-548-2051. \nBrand Library & Art Center is located in northwest Glendale\, easily accessed via the Golden State (5) or Ventura (134) freeways. These Armenian lullabies are full of images shared by the peoples of the region\, from the rose to the nightingale\, and are full of the hopes of all peoples\, that the baby should rest well and grow and multiply.Virginia Kerovpyan will sing some of these marvelous Armenian folk poems along with the lightly plucked kanoun improvisations of Aram Kerovpyan. SUMMARY:Abril Bookstore Presents Wendy Elliott GRIT AND GRACE IN A WORLD GONE MAD
DESCRIPTION:GRIT AND GRACE IN A WORLD GONE MAD tells the remarkable yet little known story of a small group of American and Canadian missionaries and relief workers in Talas who saved thousands of Armenian\, Greek and Turkish orphans from starvation\, disease and harm during the dying days of the Ottoman Empire. They were part of a massive humanitarian aid effort\, which was said of at the time\, “If the expedition succeeds to the full measure of its program\, it will be a modern miracle; if it accomplishes a half of what it is undertaking\, it will mean the saving of a race and the restoring of a blighted land. In any event\, it is a superb adventure in neighborliness\, the parable of the Good Samaritan wrought out on a gigantic scale.” The impetus for writing this nonfiction book came from the discovery of one of the missionaries’ personal letters and documents that had been sitting in a trunk for a hundred years.\n \nWENDY ELLIOTT\, MEd\, is a writer\, designer and instructor. She is the author of a self-published young adult novel\, The Dark Triumph of Daniel Sarkisyan. She won an award for her radio play\, Millennium Madness\, and has a passion for education\, history and genealogy. Her interest in Armenia stems from four volunteer assignments she completed there in 2006-2009 for a Canadian international development organization. Wendy lives near Toronto.\n\nToronto based author WENDY ELLIOTT will be in town to present her newly published book\,GRIT AND GRACE IN A WORLD GONE MAD: Humanitarianism in Talas\, Turkey 1908 – 1923  at a special Los Angeles release event on TUESDAY\, MAY 7\, 2019 at 7:30pm at ABRIL BOOKSTORE – 415 E. Broadway\, Glendale\, CA. Author will be introduced by Georgia Stavropoulos of the Hellenic University of Southern California. Admission is free. For more information\, call (818) 243-4112.

SUMMARY:Glendale Arts & Tax Defense Group Present BOB EUBANKS BACKSTAGE WITH THE BEATLES
DESCRIPTION:There are Beatle tribute bands and books and films about The Beatles. But there has NEVER been a show like Bob Eubanks Backstage With The Beatles ! \nYou probably know Bob as the host of The Newlywed Game\, and as the co-host of the Rose Parade for Tribune Broadcasting for nearly 38 years. Bob was also a popular rock ‘n roll dee-jay. What audiences will be surprised to learn is that Bob is the only living person to have produced and financed a Beatles concert all three years they toured America. \nDid you know that in 1964\, Bob borrowed $25\,000 on his house and presented The Beatles to Los Angeles at the Hollywood Bowl? In 1965 he produced two shows at the Hollywood Bowl and one in 1966 at Dodger Stadium. After that 1966 concert\, there would only be one more. The Beatles would never tour again. \nBob has fascinating and hilarious never-heard-before stories about his experiences with The Beatles\, their manager Brian Epstein\, and the screaming throngs of fans who attended the concerts. He has put together an entertaining one-of-a-kind show that will appeal to all audiences. Backstage With The Beatles combines seldom heard stories about the ‘Fab Four’\, never before seen photos of the Bob and the band\, and classic Beatle songs sung live onstage by talented tribute band Ticket to Ride. \nAudiences are raving about this show\, and tickets have been selling out quickly! \nBackstage With The Beatles is co-presented with Glendale Arts\, the non-profit management company of the Alex Theatre. Proceeds from the show will go towards the Glendale Arts Programming Fund\, which powers quality programming at the Alex Theatre by providing support to Resident Companies and other non-profit organizations that makes it possible for them to present their performances at the Alex. \nVIP Tickets\nVIP tickets include a pre-show reception – 6:30-7:30 pm in the Terrace Lobby – where guests will have a chance to meet Bob Eubanks and the members of Ticket To Ride. \nPERFORMANCE ADVISORY\nLate Seating: Latecomers will be seated at discretion of the event’s Presenter \nBob Eubanks offers an exclusive\, limited edition poster\, sold after the show at a special show price\, but the line to purchase this poster can be long. VIP ticket holders will have the opportunity to purchase the poster during the Meet ‘n Greet reception prior to the show. Bob will sign the poster with any personalization you request and it will be secured in a protective cardboard tube. You can pick it up after the show without waiting in line. A bonus available ONLY to VIP ticket holders!

SUMMARY:11 Steps Ahead: Future Forward Armenian American Visionaries
DESCRIPTION:While the original Futurists in Italy applied their aesthetics and social practices of technology and the industrial city to diverse artistic mediums in order to emphasize a movement of youth and the “new\,” futurism as a term has since been tied to other movements using diverse genres in order to advance thought and artistic output. Notably\, Afrofuturism has long explored how aspects of the African diaspora relate to technology by employing philosophy\, science fiction among other forms to narrate a history and future that reflects an alternative imagining of culture.\nThe fate of Armenia and its own diaspora following the 1915 genocide saw a rapid dispersal of Armenians around the world\, creating an integration of global influences and experiences in the Armenian people. Generations later\, children of survivors of the genocide\, born in diverse parts of the world and with wide-ranging cultural and artistic influences\, have continued to alter their own histories – and futures – by inserting themselves into progressive artistic and scientific movements\, no matter where they established new life.\nThe artists gathered here represent a shared inspiration from a constant exchange of diverse ideologies and cultures in the diaspora\, each having created a unique sensitivity toward a certain future in their works. Their respective mediums – visual storytelling and graphic novels\, production architecture\, visual art\, design\, and music (cello) – tell a story of integrating history into a present image of reality in order to serve our collective future. These stories are fabricated both in the visual depictions of their imagery and music as well as the use of traditional materials and media of our present day.
